Just put the Mallory Hyfire ignition on my 318 yesterday. Was on my way to work this morning when it just shuts off while driving down the road, after 40 minutes of running perfectly fine. Was able to crank it back over and get to work, but it kept doing the same thing, drive for a few minutes, then it would just shut off, no sputter, just off. Could crank it back up after about 30 seconds and cycling the key off and back on again. I've got the ballast resistor bypassed, so that might be the issue, followed the wiring diagram that was supplied with the box. Any help would be great.

If it's a 690 or 695 part numbered box there ain't nothing Mallory about it. That's an MSD deal. I didn't know online they are calling them a HyFire V box.

Sounds like something is getting hot, expands and opens the circuit. Cools off an it's good again. I've had a Hyfire-6al in my Dart for almost 20 years and it's still going strong. They do take specific coils.

It's a 690 part # branded as Mallory.

My coil is mounted on the intake, I'm kinda wondering if the heat is the problem. What coil are you running?

It's a Mallory race only coil on my Dart Sport race car. Not a good idea to use one on a car seeing extended driving.

Not particularly specific: https://static.summitracing.com/global/images/instructions/MAA-690.pdf

As for something overheating & opening the circuit, it could be coil or something inside the box.

I didn't see where you need a ballast resister in the instructions.

Most likely it's the coil having issues or maybe a bad ground.

There's only one ground on the box, so that's an easy double check, I'll make sure that that ground is happy. And my thinking is the same for the ballast resistor

If it's inside the box, that would just be caused by bad ground, right? Or faulty box. I'm leaning towards coil, because I have its the factory unit and is mounted on the intake, where there's plenty of heat

Picked up an epoxy-filled pertronix coil today, trying to decide if I should mount it on the intake again, or up on the firewall somewhere, I don't really want to drill into the firewall, but if that's what I need to do, then I'll do it. After some research, I had the other coil mounted completely horizontal, which might've been bad for it, since it's oil filled

After a bunch more looking connections, and probing around with a multimeter, I found the problem. The box is bad. The body of the box has 4.9mV on it, and if you short the body of the box to ground, then the car shuts off. Now I just have to wait for Tuesday to be able to warranty it.

Whatever happened with this deal?

That's the coil I'm running with a Mallory 6AL. Haven't had any issues with it. The 6AL is mounted under my dash and the coil is on the intake.

Ok. Hadn't heard anything. Please keep us posted.
Got the box delivered today, all that the paperwork said that they did was remake a crimp connection at the ground. Mounted it, got everything wired and ready, car still dies intermittently. I made a video of what it was doing and I'm going to email it to MSD and complain. At this point, I'm pretty close to ready to ditch Mallory/MSD stuff and buy a Pertronix box instead

This was my biggest fear when MSD bought the Mallory name. I wish they would have just killed it rather than do what they are doing, which is using their junk and putting the Mallory name on it.

They have changed the Unilite distributor so it uses the junk GM/MSD advance system rather than the Mallory advance mech.

If you can't tell, I'm not an MSD fan.

FWIW. Had issue with same set up as well. I bought the Mallory coil and intermittent problem went away...…….
