I need to clean up a original cast iron TQ intake. The heat shield on the bottom needs cleaning under but is rivited on. Anyone ever removed this plate?

The rivets will pull out. They are spiral tapered rivets. I get a small chisel and get under the head and get it started and then grab it with vise grips and pull it right out. Once you get them moving, they will come right out. I always just leave them off. It really doesn't do "much".

I kinda figured it would be just as well without the plate, just another pocket to collect crud.

the hot exhaust crossover will coke the oil so they put the shield on there. Dont know if it helped or not. seems like a great place to collect carbon.

if you file two flats on opposite sides of the "rivet" head, it doesn't take much, then you can put a crescent wrench on the head and it will just unscrew out. If after cleaning it out, you want to reinstall it you can just tap them with a small hammer, and they'll just screw themselves back in.

Oven cleaner works good on carbon buildup. I have used it on other intakes that could not be taken apart to clean.
