.....Azul, one of our Redbone Coonhounds...

was acting off this morning. Whenever she is standing at the front door with her head hanging some there is something wrong with her. She did not eat breakfast, drink any water or take any of my home made treats. Told Ernie I bet she ate another rock. Last time this happened our vet told us how to induce vomiting, if the rock has not made it into her gut yet this may help her out. Did not remember what she said and not wanting to take a chance we called the vets office. 32 miles, one x-ray later she has a rock in her gut. Vet was concerned that she had not drank any water, suggested we leave her so they could put her on on IV and hydrate her. They told us to be back at 5:30 to pick her up. They are going to do another X-ray, just to make sure the rock is making its way back out...damn buckethead....

Azul did not get any better over night. She would drink water and throw it back up within a few minutes. Called our Vet this morning, told us to bring her in. They took a quick X-Ray, said that the rock had not moved and surgery was needed. Patiently waiting for the call to go and pick her up.....

Prayers sent for the pooch! Hope everything turns out ok.

Having just went thru a bunch of hound surgery, sure am wishing you and the bucket head all the best! We are literally looking at taking out insurance on our hound as a result of this last years bills. I swear the counter girl at the Vets office knows us by name.

Whatever you find out about the insurance please do let me know...between Daisy, our Pitbull and Azul I dropped over $1300 this week. Luckily, up until now, everyone has been healthy. Daisy developed this cough. Vet initially thought it was from the way her and the 2 young male Redbones play, as they get very rough. Daisy will lay on her back and the boys just lay on top of her, chewing on her. Then she will get up and take off running, wait until they are in pursuit than she will turn around and try and tackle them. Ended up being some sort of infection, thing that still has her baffled is her temp was normal and her chest sounded clear.

Potato! Hope everything comes out ok for the pup. (literally)
Well....I'm not ashamed to admit that I was fighting back the tears when we left her at the vet. And when we were driving her home...and every time I walk by the crate she is passed out in. Vet said we need to let her sleep tonight, then start her on regimen of pills tomorrow. Limit her food and water, slowly increasing the amounts over the weekend. She did say she may have passed it...eventually. But the longer we waited the higher the risk of serious complications.

Despite spending more than half of my monthly income in the past 3 days I love these bucketheads.....

Totally understand, when mine did the whole surgery thing wife would not let me sleep at vets but when we got her home all drugged out and stitched up I slept on floor beside her. First surgery they left some hardware in, second surgery they had to go in and remove hardware, as a result they gave her a staff infection. Third surgery they had to go in and clean out staff infection. About broke me dollar wise and emotionally. I need to unplug here for a few days and go to a wedding. I will keep you posted on the hound insurance.

Bummer deal I thought my dog was special when it eats crap, but cheaper than eating rocks. Hope all works out

Your dog thinks it's a bird, not a bird dog.

I hope things work out for her.

Please do keep he in your thoughts.
She spent the night in the crate. At 5:30 this morning her sister came over and woke us up, Azul was awake. Ernie took her out for a few minutes. Bought her in and started trying to give her the meds. Azul ended up in one of our Lazy Boys, if we let her she will sleep there all day. May be easier to give her the meds in the chairs.
I have never had any kids, my hats off to all of you folks that have kids. I don't think I would have been able to handle having a sick or injured child. I really think it would have broke me.
Please do keep her in your thoughts and prayers...got to go now, the tears are flowing again....

Our critters ARE our children!! Weare all wishing for a speedy recovery.

Any person that has never known the love and affection between man and a dog... there is a piece of his soul he has never found. Not sure who said that to begin with, but I have to agree.

Thanks. I look forward to enjoying my time in the chair every night with one of the pups. I know some folks say they are "just an animal"...they have never had a dog that they connected with.

Maybe she will learn to test/gauge things before she eats them.... Like this monkey:

A guy walks into a bar with his pet monkey. He orders a drink and while he's drinking, the monkey starts jumping all over the place. The monkey grabs some olives off the bar and eats them, then grabs some sliced limes and eats them, then jumps up on the pool table, grabs the cue ball, sticks it in his mouth and swallows it whole.

The bartender screams at the guy, "Did you see what your monkey just did?"

The guy says, "No, what?"

"He just ate the cue ball off my pool table - whole!" says the bartender.

"Yeah, that doesn't surprise me," replies the patron. "He eats everything in sight, the little jerk. I'll pay for the cue ball and stuff." He finishes his drink, pays his bill, and leaves.

Two weeks later he's in the bar again, and he has his monkey with him. He orders a drink and the monkey starts running around the bar again.

While the man is drinking, the monkey finds a maraschino cherry on the bar. He grabs it, sticks it up his butt, pulls it out, and eats it.

The bartender is disgusted. "Did you see what your monkey did now?"

"Now what?" asks the patron.

"Well, he stuck a maraschino cherry up his butt, then pulled it out and ate it!" says the barkeeper.

"Yeah, that doesn't surprise me," replies the patron. "He still eats everything in sight, but ever since he ate that cue ball he measures everything first!"

One of my bosses had a DA dog that liked rocks too. One time, actually a couple of times in the same summer, when X-rayed, his stomach was completely filled with gravel from the parking lotta. I guess it got a lil expensive, cuz he wore a muzzle after that, for the rest of the summer.

Here ya go guys, I paid a neighbor kid to watch and wear out Hemi while we were away this weekend. He is 8 years old and the two of them played till they dropped. A young boy and a dog just puts all the crap from the news in perspective. Neither of them had a care in the world!

I just went thru the same thing with my aussie Rocky. He is an inside dog he only goes outside on a lease under supervisor. And some how he ate something that made his sick as a..... well dog! Lol
He was fine one day and the next he just stopped eating and drinking and laying around, which was a huge alarm because he is always hyper. That was followed by explosive nasty diarrhea and vomiting. I took him to the vet first thing the next morning. He had ate something and it gave him an infection in his gut. They gave him a shot and some antibiotics and he is fine now. It took about 3 days for him to be completely better.

This is not the first time I have heard of this. There is something in the dirt in our area that damn near every dog I have seen must find edible as they all pick up mouthfuls of dirt, sift thru it and sometimes spit it out, others swallow it. Neighbor said it is some sort of bug...who knows...

Glad that he fully recovered.

Azul is doing much better. Tomorrow she will be returning to her regular food. She will thankfully be done with all of her pills by Thursday. Her eyes have cleared up, she is back to having that real loving look in them. She is dying to go out and run...and dig but the vet said to wait 2 weeks so she is confined to the pen behind the house and gets put on a leash when she is out front. Needless to say when Ernie was walking with her yesterday she picked up a rock......:BangHead::BangHead::BangHead:

I hope Azul continues to improve. I just lost a dog to stomach cancer the other day, so I know the worry you feel when a dog is sick all too well. We don’t have kids either, and our little dogs are our kids. The way I watch my dogs like a hawk, kids woulda hated having me for a Dad! I think all dog lovers are about the same. Get well soon Azul !

Back in Missouri, I have seen our horses get a mouthful of dirt and eat it, they had the best feed, hay, pasture, and minerals. Here in SE Tx never seen them eat dirt or should I say sand here, Maybe sand is the operative word!?
