Lost spark suspect coil

Hello
I lost spark coming out of coil tower wire to ground. Been temperamental driving car shutting off randomly but finally died at my house permanently it seems.
I have the mopar performance coil p 4876732 now with orange box. I’m measuring .7 ohms primary but my secondary is coming in at 5000 ohms I was expecting higher 10-11000 ohms. I realize it could be other issues but I figured I’d start with a coil easy enough based on my readings. It does not look like they make this coil anymore. I do have plans down the road to go to an MSD ignition with future engine. Is there an MSD coil I can put in now to use I have an electronic dizzy on a 383 motor.

Try your local Mopar dealer for this number. P5155514. Use with 1/4 Ohm Ballast resistor. This is copied from the Mopar Performance catalogue.


Blaster Coils

These high-performance cylindrical Blaster Coils are oil-filled. They feature 100:1

turns ratio, threaded-stud primary connection and conventional "socket-style"

tower. Designed for high-performance street and race applications. Use 1/4-ohm

ballast resistor P2444641 when used with ignition kits P3690426, P3690427,

P3690428.

Thank you as I was under the gun for time I ended up ordering from Jegs a kit that had the coil, ignition module, cap,rotor, and resistor. I realize these are cheap china parts but I figured I would throw in glove box for now.

Parts came today and the coil leaked out it’s oil in the box it came in. Further inspection of ignition ground revealed a surprise. Previous owner didn’t scratch any paint away on firewall and the bottom screw mount was a washer/bolt crudely trapping the painted firewall sheet metal. Not to mention I didn’t know I had large holes behind the module.
Ugg, straightened out that and nice spark again - car up and running.
New spare coil being shipped by jegs. Tested new jegs module good so in the glove box now.

Great to hear your problem is fixed gdbuick,
You are now fully indoctrinated into the world of Mopar electrical gremlins as so many others on here have been, including Me!!
Take-away lesson to be learned... look for the simple solution first! Grounds, bulkhead connector, old frayed wiring etc..

I now run a separate heavy gauge ground wire from the negative battery post to one of the orange box mounting screws.

Yes, I got caught. Funny i tried to hot wire the coil for a few seconds with pos and negative batt power separate leads from wiring harness and using a test light one end grounded and using the probe in the coil tower removing the neg lead of coil expecting a spark and it didn’t so I thought coil issue.
When I found my ground issue seeing the obvious with key off I added my ground to ignition case and because I had the coil tower wire resting on valve cover it sparked !

Good idea. I actually did that idea although I didn’t run it all the way to the battery. So basically I have three grounding points now.
