I am putting my 1971 340 motor in my 1968 Barracuda. I have the correct timing chain cover, the one with the cast raised timing marks on the passenger side but I seem to be having a problem coming up with the correct balancer. The way I look at it if you are looking at the front of the balancer and the key way on the balancer is at 4 O'Clock then the timing mark should be on the passenger side. I have received responses from other members who say they have the balancer that I need but it's not this way, with there's if the key way is strait up at 12 O'Clock then the timing mark is on the passenger side which is exactly like the one on this 71 motor. Anyone that has the correct balancer if you could post a picture, part number or what ever I do not want to buy the wrong one.
Thanks
Bob

Thanks for the picture Brian, your balancer looks exactly like the one that's on my 71 340 right now and if you were to put your balancer on my 71 340 with the key way at 4 O'Clock then the timing mark would be on the drivers side also so what gives? Here are a few pictures on my 71 340, you can see the key way at 4 O'Clock and you can also see that it is on TDC on the drivers side as it should be. Is there something that I am missing, is there someone out there that has a 71 340 that can check and see where there key way is at TDC.
Thanks
Bob

Is there anyone out there that has a balancer even if it is not for sale just for the picture sake that if you put the key way at 4 O'Clock and the timing mark is on the passenger side.
Bob

The key way at 4 o'clock is not at TDC. Here is a 68 front cover that has the timing marks on the passenger side that goes with the balancer.

If you need a balancer for a 71 front cover like what you have you need this.

I need to look into this a little bit further. The balancer that's on this 71 motor is just like the 68 balancer in your picture. Time out, I need to re-look at everything on this motor again I think I have a mix match of parts on this thing. This is the 340 motor that came with that 1974 Scamp that I did a few years back so I need to investigate a little further.
Thanks for the pictures and your help.

Hello, and thank you for the information! If I may interject and hijack for a moment here, is that '71 balancer similar to the 318 that year with the offset asymmetrical bolt pattern for the crank pulley? Where is off set hole in relation to the TDC mark on that one?

Key way will be the same, the marks on the balancer will be different with the old and new front covers. Think of it this way, is there different timing sets for each cover? No, so the keyway stays put.

Also I think the keyway will be at 2 o'clock with number 1 at TDC not 4.

This is a 68 dampner, if you turn the crank back so the keyway is at 2 o'clock the timing mark will be at 11. Right where the passenger side cast in scale will be. Looking at them now it seems easy. Key lines up with timing mark it is a new balancer. Keyway is a quarter of the way around off. It is old.

Thank you all for all the replies. What I have here is a 1971 340 motor with a 1971 timing cover and water pump, along with a 1968 harmonic balancer hence the timing mark is on TDC but the stroke is not. I never really paid attention to it until brian6pac sent me the pictures simply because I thought this was a 1971 balancer which it is not. Now that I know what I have here I can go ahead and make my changes and get this motor ready for the 68 Barracuda. Once again THANK YOU ALL mystery solved.

Hey folks looking for a similar balancer. 340 with pass side timing cover. I know I could remark my new balancer but would rather not. Anyone make one with pass side marks? Not outrageously priced.
Thanks.
