Factory Painted "Vinyl" Roof

-
You see all kinds I think, my car was originally a slickback fastback .... Not too many people knew of this model type.
The owner restored the car completely but then was not able to find the vinyl top and most important the moldings that were in the roof itself. So they just decided to pain the roof.(I think the paint just got gun happy and continued all the way down the hatch, lol)
Thankfullyxi was able to find the moldings ( truly grateful to A56 WHO HAD SOME AND SOLD THEM TO ME)
Next summer I will be putting it back together.

My SC400 is clear coat checking something awful, and was going to put a wrap on top just like your paint scheme. Semi gloss black over the maroon. Would have to look better than what it looks like now. All the clear on the sides is fine.

The 64 Belvedere I had in 1968. Picture was taken at Minot AF Base. White car black spray on top. 318 three on tree 3 speed.

Saw this car over the week-end. It's a 1969 Dart with modern paint, but the fender tag shows B5 & B7 (top & bottom respectively).

I've also seen a 1970 Dart with a black painted top and (I believe Go-Mango) orange body. Coincidentally, the 1970 car is owned by the previous, previous owner of my car.

Not sure I've ever seen a 1971 Dart with a painted "vinyl" roof. Do they exist?

What are your thoughts on removing the actual vinyl and painting the roof to look like it's still "vinyl"? Body color? Or the removed vinyl color? Gloss, semi-gloss, matte?

"prettytony" owns this car

Thoughts?

I used to work with a guy that has a 52-54 ford pick up, restomoded /huge tires, low geared 9" hot 383 sbc/turbo 400 I think. He had a really nice looking blue paint job on it w/ a lot of extra work done to the truck. HE RUINED IT WITH A SPRAY ON BLACK VYNAL ROOF , looks cheap as hell.

I am redoing a 69 340 Swinger R4 red with Black painted top from factory. I am going white for the top though because its too freakin hot here for a black top.
I realize this is an old post, curious if you have photos of this as R4 with the black painted roof. Neat sounding combo, I've personally never seen a painted roof in contrasted color on a Dart.

Back in the 50's a two tone car was common. When the vinyl top craze stated, the two tone deal was pretty much dad.
The idea of the vinyl top was to make it look sorta like a vert.
Try finding a good vinyl top car today that has rusted to heck.

I know this is an older thread but I searched V02 and this came up. F8-W1 1970 Custom.

Then there's this, my old '68 Barracuda with the texture paint roof with a glued band down each side to simulate a vinyl top. As far as I could ever tell, it was a factory painted textured roof...

In 1968 my dad bought a coronet and had the dealer spray a vinyl top on after he bought it. Not to uncommon.

I cant recall the code right off the top of my head I will look later but my 75 has vinyl top code in the build sheet and it didnt have a vinyl top on it. It was painted white. It had all the trim with a white roof brown body. It had no indication that the vinyl had ever been removed or the car had ever been repainted. It was a one owner car with 80k miles owned by a little old lady that bought it new. I seriously don't think that she had it removed and repainted. She parked it in 89 because it needed a idler arm and ball joints. I bought it in 2000 it sat for 11 years.

My last Dart was a 69 swinger 340 4 speed car F6 bright green metallic with a black painted roof. Even have pictures of it back in 74 and later in the 80's.

There were "white hat specials", cars with a particular option package that also included a white top. Not sure what the coding was but the top could be either vinyl or painted.

I had a 67 white hat special Coronet 440.

I think the only option, however, besides a 318, was an automatic.

My 71 Dart Swinger Special
had a painted top. I was told it was done at the dealer but I cannot verify that. Is there a code as mentioned above for 71?
