we got this little bayliner, 19 foot boat
nice little boat, bought it a few years ago but with the baby being born last spring, we havent had it out in about 2 years
so i got it dusted off over the week and got ready to take it out today
since i wasnt sure how it would go, i decided to only take the boy out

so, hooked the boat up to the bronco (i know i know, should have bought a dodge)
managed to get her down to the boat launch with the truck only stalling out about 5 times, and i only had to turn the crank by hand 3 times to get the starter to mesh

got the boat in the water, and it ran allright but it didnt want to go into gear from idle without dying
i figured it would "clear" up after running it for a while
so, we got going, did allright
idled through the no wake zone, out into the big lake
and anchored it some 30 feet out from the beach

me and the boy jumped of, did some frisbeeing, some swimming and got going again...well, tried to

i fired her up and when i went to put her in gear, she stalled out

it did that to me 4 or 5 times, and i hadnt noticed that as it was stalling out, the current pushed it across my anchor line

i finally got her going, the drive rattled and shook and then it died on me

i jumped out and sure enough, my anchor line was wrapped around the drive and 2 or my 3 prop bladed were gone

so, we pulled her a close to the beach as we could, ran a new anchor line to the beach, grabbed the keys and started walking

luckily, there was a lady there who was willing to give us a ride back to the boatlaunch, so we could at least get the truck back home

so, we got in the truck, fired it up and drove about 50 foot before it backfired and stalled
at that point the carb caught fire and i was not about to get it going again

now, it had happened before that the starter would hit what i guess is a flat spot, and i would have to get down and turn the crank a few degrees by hand before it would catch again
but at this point, it just would not engage no matter how much i turned the crank

finally i had someone tow the bronco a few more feet out of the way (he didnt have much choice, if he was gonna get his boat out) and walked home

when we got there, i jumped into the charger to at least get the trailer home but as of right now...the boat and the truck are still stranded

Just picture your little boy in the hospital hooked to a bunch of machines, waiting for some other little kid to die so he can have a heart transplant.

Feel better yet?

The good thing is the memories with dad. That is the ONLY thing that matters.

Is awesome you're spending time with him. Can't get that back and you'll laugh about this when he's older

in about 1965, I took my little brother swimming. He was still in diapers so swimming was in the backyard in a one-ring plastic pool. I'm guessing there mightabin an inch or so but not two, of water in the thing.
To his dying day( killed in a trucking accident in 2008) he believed I put him in there to drown. He was still in diapers so maybe a bit over two years old at most.Memory is a tricky thing.
Jus saying

But yeah, I shouldda spent more time with mine when they were growing up. But they still love me.
Good on you for making the time

Never known anybody so social media addicted they had to take the time to take a pitcher of their carburetor on fire. Nice touch. lol

I remember having bad luck on outings with my dad. His boat quit on us on green river lake once back in 1974, we were stranded and after several hours we flagged another boater down and he towed us back to the dock. It was a bad day but one of my cherished memories.

Since we've been out fishing in my 16' tin boat, my friend Bucky wants to go out in his cobbled up hodge podged 16' fiberglass.....not a chance! Frickin thing hasn't been in water in 3 years and CAA ain't on the water.
Hope luck turns around for you. Perseverance.

I've been on and around boats my entire life, the only one I've ever been on that HAVEN'T broken down is my sailboat.

Got the boat back home...it was actually kinda fun
We just took the entire family to the beach and while they played, I fixed the boat
(Turns out, swapping out a prop is a 2 minute job. ..if you have the right tools)

Overnight the current had pushed the boat further ashore and I could tell people had been in it, but nothing was stolen or broken so I'm not too mad about that

The only thing to decide now is if I want to tow the bronco home and fix it, or slap it in neutral and just let it roll into the lake

I hear that OJ is out of jail, he may be in the market for another Bronco...

If he's anything like me he'll remember it forever. I've got dozens of these stories with my Dad. I always learned something and didn't feel the stress he did. You just gave him a life experience.

Oh yeah, to him it was just two days on the beach...whats not to like?

And it will be a great story for him...and some street cred for me
I can hear him now "well my dad fixed our boat on the beach with nothing but a banana"

(The wrench used to pull the prop nut off does resemble a banana a bit)

Anyway, I'm pretty sure I diagnosed it right, on my first try

What brand anchor rode eats props?

Full chain?

I use 25' chain and 200" of braid but I anchor in deep water. My boat has 7" of keel under her...

So at 7 to 1 scope I'm at 70 feet of line with my keel hitting the bottom.

Twin 25 lbs anchors in the bow hatch and a single 15lb in the rear.

All marked at 10 foot intervals with labeled length on pink tape through the braid.

I normally use 10 to 1 for a good set.

Heres some of my favorite shots from the boat. A shitty day on the boat is better than a good day at work!

And my buddy shawn on the tiller. When I moved here to San jose I left her in his care.
At least she will get used and taken care of.
And you can just see the joy on his face.

This pic is the last time I took her out and I had just told shawn, " when i leave, you should take my boat."

God I love boats even as fickle as they are, there is nothing better than a day on the water....

That prop has been in the dirt a lot. (Or your cavatitating the **** out of it but I doubt that)

Those Mark's ain't from running over your anchor rode.

Buy a cheep fish finder, use it to watch/measure depth.

It will help with anchor setting and keep your prop out of the dirt.

I don't know.I've had two boats and both were big money holes in the water.

there is maybe 5 foot of chain, and then braided rope
i agree, i dont see how the anchor rope could have done this to the prop

maybe i hit something that ripped the blades off and didnt realize it?
that doesnt sound too plausible

there is for sure a sandbank near the shore, and i know ive hit that a few years ago when i last had it out

getting a fishfinder does sound like a good plan

now, what does the fraction mean, 7 to 1, 10 to 1, is that the angle of the anchor rope?

Yikes! I've bent a few but never broke 'em off.

You just never know what you can run into. My fish finder didn't see whatever put this gouge into my skeg in 6-7 feet of water nearing a bridge (Prairie Lake, WI). Made a loud bang but didn't kill the engine. Guessing possibly some reinforcement wire from concrete sticking up.

Most of my best memories with my dad were in shitty situations lol. They stuck in my head because my dad is a badass when it comes to thinking fast on-the-fly and getting out of tight spots, he's also super cool-headed and never freaks out, just jumps right in and does what needs to be done. Plus he's very physically strong and has unreal endurance as well as patience. I hope I can at least somewhat reach his level by the time I'm a father. I want my kids to feel as safe and secure around me as I do with my dad.
