I am wondering if this should get hot enough to burn the paint off. It also sounds like there is a slight exhaust leak coming from that area. Is this normal. I started to take the two bolts out so I could see inside the cavity, but of course one of the bolts snapped off so that is when I stopped messing with this. Thanks for any help in advance!

No, you will need a new lower choke housing, the exhaust crossover burns them out causing a exhaust leak.

There is an exhaust gasket under the heat riser and a small inverted metal cup the gasket goes under Yes it gets hot enough to burn the paint off in this area. Its the heat riser for the choke flap and to warm up the area under the carb for smooth cold weather opearation. Heres a pic of the intake i restored minus paint. Note the tin cup. It covers the big gaping hole. A gasket, and the inverted cup fits in there, your heat riser fits into the cup.

What they said, plus now you gotta broke off bolt to get out.

snapped that bolt huh? Only one thing to do - throw that whole boat anchor away and use the snapped bolt as an excuse to get an aluminum 4 barrel manifold and carb!!! You will never be sorry!!!

What I do for broken bolts is weld a little nipple on there, the weld heats it up and gives you something to grab on to with vise grips. I did this to two next to the crossover on a 318, and heed the same technique to remove 3 of 4 bump stop bolts on rear of my 67 notch. Oh yea, also a 65 833 filler plug

you might want to check that the heat riser is opening up all the way when fully warmed up, so that the choke is not subjected to unnecessary heat.

Likely that the crossover is plugged with carbon build up as well, another reason to upgrade to a 4bbl! If you've ever had to clean one of those passages out, you'll know exactly what I mean.

Thanks for all of the replies! I know I should switch the whole mess over to a 4bbl set up. This car was bought new in 71 by my grandmother. It has 69k miles unmolested on the clock. I would like to keep it all stock if possible. I was kicking around converting it to a pro tour car, but I have changed my mind and keep it original. I will find another A body to hop up someday I hope. Thought I would include pics of all my toys lol the 73 blazer is the next project going into the shop.

Love the Byoowack! What a RIDE!

Thanks for asking, For the moment its not. Life getting in the way kinda thing, however i have a second build thread on a 69 notchback. My son is now 6. No more real little ones to buzzkill my time in the shop. Its super hard with 2 people that work full time and deal with 3 kids.

Now the 69 started as a half stripped parts car for my 67. Bought it that way. Realized its pretty solid, and can be restored. Decided to store it the last 4 years out at a buddys place under a carport while making a list and collecting up the parts for it. Car was in full view of the highway behind a fence. I am betting he is glad its gone as he was getting tired of people asking if it was for sale and having to tell them no. Now he has a clean barn fresh 68 chevelle malibu 2 door hardtop parked where the cuda was. This is an eventual build for his wife. So at least its not my car people will be asking questions about lol. Honestly, i could see myself building that chevelle, its way cleaner than the 69 i have.

My son and i started on the 69s actual resurrection on May 11th this year. I told him if he puts in the sweat equity its his when he is driving age. The meat and potatoes of the build as in the metal replacement will start when he is around 11. Just trying to assess the vehicle, make it look somewhat decent, and stop the exterior corrosion for now.

Using PPG 2K aircraft epoxy primer 512X310 light grey. this meets BMS specifications for adhesion and corrosion resistance. i got this expired from work. Its urethane compatible, tough as nails, sprays and fills nicely, sands well with 220 to apply a high build blocking primer over it. Sombody brutalized it with a DA sander in multiple spots then left it to the elements. Its a loooong road reversing that.

The whole build thread is quite entertaining , however the rebuilding process begins on about page 8. Go look in members restorations for (67/68/69 cuda dilemma) should be on page 1. I just posted to it last night.

Wow you have had a lot going on. Well my kids are all out of the house now and I still cant find the time to do some wrenching on my stuff. Oh but I can somehow get talked into working on someone else's stuff. I will check out your 69 thread for sure. It's very cool that your son is involved with the build too!

Yeah I looked on Rock Auto, and Summit. There is a local parts store I can call I guess. The internet has me spoiled... order it and forget it. Next thing you know, it's at your door lol. Thanks for the complement. I enjoy the ole car.

Download a parts manual for that car from Mymopar.com, it's free and you can google/search part#'s for everything for that car.

you can get the choke spring assembly off rockauto. Its on closeout now, doesnt come with a gasket, at least mine didnt. The cup is a mopar part. somebody on here hooked me up with a gasket for my sons 318 2BBL intake. i think they said that gasket comes in the master engine rebuild kit. i know rock doesnt sell it seperate. another option would be to buy a sheet of the metal and asbestos perforated looking header collector gasket material and make your own. if your cup doesnt have a hole in it, just reuse it. i think those are a stainless alloy.if it has a hole in it enquire in parts wanted. i am sure somebody has one of these manifolds tossed in a scrap trailer, or behind their shop. maybe they will send it to you for free plus shipping.

Agree, LOL. @Shannon Buff, make sure you tell your wife that when a bolt breaks off due to heat, that it cannot be repaired.

try summit racing or any local auto parts store that has high performance parts. should be able to get it in sheet form.
