Is this normal?
There is an exhaust gasket under the heat riser and a small inverted metal cup the gasket goes under Yes it gets hot enough to burn the paint off in this area. Its the heat riser for the choke flap and to warm up the area under the carb for smooth cold weather opearation. Heres a pic of the intake i restored minus paint. Note the tin cup. It covers the big gaping hole. A gasket, and the inverted cup fits in there, your heat riser fits into the cup.
