Looking for some direction on how and what I would need to do to fit a 741 rear end in my new project (72 Duster.) I have a 318 being built at engine shop and probably going to need better rear end. .If anyone can help me get started it would be greatly appreciated.
It seems to be a bit wider than the stock rear end.

741 is just the center drop out section & nothing wrong with a 741, they were used behind Hemi engines & others for quite a while.

It sounds like you may need to ID which housing you have?

2070741- Does this help?

You need to ID the housing it mounts to.

The center section itself will fit multiple axle housings.

What are the measurements at 'A' & 'B' ?

so is it possible to use this rear end in an a-body-Duster? how much fabrication is needed or is there a different rear end to look for to handle this stroker Im putting in?

Yes sounds like you have a B body rear end there with the 741 center section. If memory serves me well the 741 setup will be 2 inches longer at the yoke compared to the 7 1/4's for your driveshaft length.

A pair of 4" backspace wheels will help to center the wheels in the wheel house.

Lucky you have the larger wheel openings of the Dusters. Darts are way more challenging to fit tires inside the rear quarters.

Drill new holes on the spring pads 1/2 to the inside on each pad and bolt it in.

Never heard of doing this before, but I like this idea, vs moving the spring pads. I Imagine you will have to redrill for the center bolt on the shock plate for this move too.

Just did that to my daughters Duster: I got the B-Body shock plates that fit the axel with the deal and bought NOS u-bolts off eBay. We had the perches cut off and re-welded with the housing 5 degrees up (factory) at 44" center then just bolted it in. The drive shaft from the /6 and 8 1/4" axel had to be shortened to 50" center to center of bearing. If doing it again I would have had the driveshaft shortened to 49.75" it is just a tiny bit to long and takes a bit of effort to get it wiggled in.

It does limit the rims you can use. These are Keystones with 4" backspacing and 205's were all I could fit. I did have to roll the lip a bit so they would not scrape....

On a 65-70 B-body rear end, all you have to do is either oval the holes "inward" per side or drill new holes next to the originals holes on the spring perches. In fact, I just did this about 2 weeks ago..... oh, by the way, welcome
