Mallory Hyfire Ignition problem

-
FWIW. Had issue with same set up as well. I bought the Mallory coil and intermittent problem went away...…….
Using a pertronix coil that I would assume is practically the same as a Mallory coil, but that's good to know.
I'm on an email with a tech, he's got some ideas on tracking down problems, so hopefully I can get it fixed asap

Another update: MSD tech email hasn't responded in 3 days. Tried to just hardwire the ignition box, so I could isolate it from the car's wiring. No difference. Unmounted the box, then set it on a folded up shop towel to insulate it from the car, it runs fine. If you try to screw it in, before it gets close to tight, the car dies, haven't gotten more than 2 screws into it.
The current plan is to call MSD on Monday and trying to get an advance replacement, or at least a replacement.

From what you're telling me it sounds like you have a Box problem but here is the coil number and what I've got running on my big block set up.

Damn, that sucks. Please keep us posted.

What ever happened with this?
Lol, it's still ongoing.
Shipped the box in for warranty again. Should be back next week. The tech guy seemed to think that he knew what had gone wrong, a chip or something on the inside of the box is overheating supposedly. Just been driving the car on my old ignition setup, kindof a pain, but oh well.
I'll post here if it finally works

Wow. What a PITA. Appreciate the updates.

A fairly new Mallory (by MaySuddenlyDie) PN 690? C'mon...this is the real Mallory 690! If it doesn't weigh 12 lbs, its not a mighty 690 :p Seriously, I have used this for 20 years and I never had an issue. I use an E-core Crane PS92.

IDK if the old Accell Square top Super Coil is compatible with your Ignition Amp, but that coil has been going strong for me since about year 2002. I mounted mine horizontally on the apron, closer to the front, with about a 2.5ft coilwire.

Those are troopers. There was a guy at Pomona that was selling them new open box for $10 a piece and he had about 50. I think they were scratch and dents from PAW (yeah, it was that long ago).

Update, got the box back from its 2nd warranty trip, the packing slip said that they replaced a transistor, which seemed promising. Mounted the box, did the wiring, dropped the distributor in and the car ran for all of five seconds before shutting off, same exact symptoms as before. I've given up on talking to MSD, going to call Summit Racing tomorrow and see if I can get anything to happen in terms of refund

Summit Racing said they actually offer a warranty on the part, but since I already went through MSD, there's absolutely nothing that Summit can do about it. Called the MSD tech line again, the tech guy was convinced my wiring was good, and that my problem is either the mag pickup in the distributor or the coil is bad. He said the only way to test the coil is by load testing it, the easiest way for me to do that is to put the coil onto another car with an MSD box that I know is good, so if anyone in the North Seattle/Everett area has a car with a functioning MSD box in it and is willing to let me test the coil in their car in the next few days, let me know.

Any new updates?????

....so if anyone in the North Seattle/Everett area has a car with a functioning MSD box in it ...

Im sure you'll find a taker. Just go to a car show and buy the guy a donut. 2 nuts and a lead change, dont even need to mount it.

couldn't you rig up a demo stand like they did in Supershops? Distributor+MSD+coil+air-gap+battery and spin the distributor? should crackle like bacon across the .050+ air gap with a spin of the distributor.
