64 Dart Hood Scare

My friend and I were removing the hood to my 64 GT last night to sand the underside for primer, and we had ourselves a good scare. After we removed the hood and set it on a stand in his garage, we were looking at the hood torsion bars to see how easy they would be to remove. After we decided not to remove them, I just barely touched the hinge, and it shot across his garage and left a imprint in the far wall about 20' away. It scared the crap out of me and we both looked at each other and said "HOLY SH__" at the exact same time! Then we decided that we better take the tension off the other torsion bar so that nobody got whacked with that one. Apparently the push nut had fallen off of one hinge but thankfully not the other.
I hate dealing with any type of hood or deck lid torsion bars or coil springs. Grind a couple of grooves 180 degrees apart in a 1/2" drive socket to take the tension off those hood bars.
It is useful to have 2 people when you do it. You're both lucky that that hinge didn't hit a person or something of value. I have had them go flying as well.
