Rim suggestion

-
Just a quick reminder; Focus on the original post. This is a 14 yr old wanting to learn from our knowledge & experience. He is spending what I am sure is cherished with his dad. Teach, share, but please don't criticize. I'll step down from the soapbox now.

Im not at all. Hell, i own a slant six.

Hi I am a 14 year old building a 73 duster and I am looking for 17x9 and 17x7 rims, 4x4.5 bolt pattern

What are your goals for the build? Sounds like getting it on the road with the slant 6 is first up, which is great. It's easy to go overboard on these cars and have them torn apart for years. Sometimes its nice just to put them back on the road and then do small upgrades as you go, getting used to the car and getting to enjoy it at the same time. Plus it gives you a better idea of what you actually want out of it!

17's are a good choice for rim size, and good tires are a lot easier to find than for a 14 or even a 15" rim. Don't be afraid of 18's either, there are even more tire options out there for them and it gives you additional tie rod clearance up front so you can run wider tires. Now, I don't know what the end goal is but stepping up to 18's will let you run wider tires up front than you can with 17's . It's not a big deal if you're just planning a nice handling street car, 245's or 255's up front are plenty and they work just fine on a 17" rim.

This is my '74 Duster turned '71 Demon clone, with 18x9's up front and 18x10's out back...

Who cares about the Honda Civic? I've driven my Duster with a stock 318 for 22 years and never raced anyone. I have a blast driving and working on it and drive it everyday in the summer. People who obsess about speed end up parking their overbuild cars in the garage and drive their Civic to work every day because they can't afford the gas, tickets, tires, broken gears, hospital bills, etc...

100%

I personally prefer classic steel wheels or ralllies, but I also like magnum 500s and cragars
If you absolutely have to go with 17s my vote goes to the cragers for 15s probably a tie between steelies and rallies!

Exactly!!!

I put 70k miles on my '72 Challenger with a mild 318 in it, pretty much stock except for an intake, 4 barrel carb and headers. With a set of 3.23's out pack it was plenty fun, and I drove it year round without any issues at all. Now, my Duster with it's ~400 hp 340 is a lot faster, but it's also been a ton more work and money to get it there and have it be a reliable daily driver too.

Everyone has their preference. I'd rather have tires that perform half decent than 15's, because all the tires for those are either hockey pucks, drag radials, or track only. And no one "absolutely has to" go with 17's, but it sounds like that's what the OP wants to do so why not post something useful for him instead of trying to convince him to do what you like instead?

Wtf you talking about. I was just giving my opinion. If you read the thread title is says rim "suggestions" so I made my suggestions. I'm sorry my suggestion isnt aligned with your! There are plenty of 15 tires out there. But if he dont want that i gave him my suggestion for 17s as well!

There are 33 posts including yours and everyone has a different opinion or suggestion. But yet you feel the need to call me out and tell me to "post something useful"? I'm not trying to convince anyone of anything I'm just voicing my opinion just like the other 33 posts! So until you get your forum police badge dont tell me how to post!

The OP states clearly in the very first post he’s looking for 17’s. In fact, he asked for 17x7’s and 17x9’s specifically. He didn’t ask for 15” rim suggestions or opinions.

And believe it or not, yours is the only one that tries to talk him into 15’s. So yeah, that’s where I’m coming from. This thread has already been derailed once with unrelated comments, let’s not make it twice shall we?

Ok so by your logic your just as guilty as me! Because he clearly states 17s and you are posting talking about 18s! What's the difference? I was not trying to talk him into anything or pushing anything I just gave my suggestions! I gave a 15 16 and 17 inch option. He can do what he wants with the information it's his car! I dont care what he puts on it! I'm not so sure why you do!! Like I said before dont tell me what to or what not to post!! Basically you dont want anyone to post or say anything unless it aligns with your opinion. I will say what I want, anywhere I want , when I want too! Your just trying to be a bully and push out every opinion that doesnt align with yours. You do it in every thread you post in. :icon_fU:

The difference is that if you're looking for 17's because 14's are hard to find, well, 18's are even easier to find than 17's. It's the same logic as the OP was already using.

And I didn't disparage his choice, or try to talk him into 18's. All I did was share some of the factual benefits of 18's compared to 17's. But that was after I posted a set of 17's for him, and after I said 17's were a good choice. I just shared that if he was willing to go to 17's, there are additional advantages to going to 18's. Not because of how they look, but because of how they perform. It's not my opinion that 18's clear the outer tie rod allowing for larger tires, that's a fact. It's not my opinion that there are more tire choices in 18", that's also a fact.

As far as my opinion, which I haven't shared in this thread, I think 17's look better. And I would run 17's over 18's. But I don't, because on an A-body a 17" rim doesn't have enough outer tie rod clearance to maximize the front tire width. And because 17" tire options are now more limited than 18" tire options. I run 17's on my Challenger because the suspension geometry is different, on an E-body you can use a 0 to +12 offset rim in the front with the max width tire, which doesn't cause tie rod clearance issues. On an A-body you need a +30 offset, which puts the lip of the rim into the tie rod with a 17". Simple as that. Just the facts.

Aight man whatever I dont even care anymore. I just didnt appreciate you calling my out and disregarding my opinion but it is what it is!
I like classic looking rims weither it be cragers steelies rallies etc. And you can get those cragers in 17s so that's my recommendation!!
