Backing plate question

the foam? Gasket between the backing plate and spindle where can I get them? Front drum.

Some say don't worry about them. Leave them out.
Some say the thin foam you can get at a craft store is a good alternative.
Some say they MUST be there. ( I personally don't see why.)
I cannot give you a definite answer. Only options.
 
Originally the axle bearings are packed with grease and the seals and gaskets prevent any oozing from the grease. Originally there was a metal five hole gasket between the rear end housing and the backing plate and a foam five hole gasket between the backing plate and the axle retainer (one side adjuster and other side non). Then you had an inner and outer seal. If you still pack your wheel bearings, I recommend you use new seals and gaskets.
