Backing plate question

Originally the axle bearings are packed with grease and the seals and gaskets prevent any oozing from the grease. Originally there was a metal five hole gasket between the rear end housing and the backing plate and a foam five hole gasket between the backing plate and the axle retainer (one side adjuster and other side non). Then you had an inner and outer seal. If you still pack your wheel bearings, I recommend you use new seals and gaskets.
