Boys first time shooting...
Old Henry AR-7 .22LR Survival rifle. Terrible non adjustable peep sight in the back.

28 years? Wow that's incredible shooting! I bet that was a blast (pun intended) those Henry's are such nice rifles. I have always wanted a lever action Henry. The survivors are cool tho.
Nice way to spend a day. I'm over due a range day myself...not 28 years overdue but overdue. Lol
I have three at that I have built that needs test and tuning. And a custom mauser that I build that hasn't been shot.

Congrats on a fun day with your boys.
Where did you go shooting? Looks like an orchard in the background so I don't think it's Lytle Creek.

Wait , that was with rifles ?!?
AR-7 is a breakdown rifle in .22LR. Its no rear sight adjustable M-16A2, my last rig. I could pull a group like this at 300m line during rapid fire (10 rounds, 60 seconds from 2 5-round mags). Iron sights, none of this optics stuff of today. @512Stroker, that is an amazing group. 600 yds. bench with a scope? Never have shot scope or bench but 600yds is out there. 500m line with an A2, the man size target (B-mod) has a 20" wide black target bull and my 10 rounds from a prone position was typically a 10" group. The front site post covered the entire black portion of that target. 500m line was my favorite.

Yes that group was shot off a rest on a concrete bench at Big Piney Sportmens Club.
In 2016 I was fortunate to rank 3rd in the IBS Nationals where my groups averaged 1.996 inches at 600 yards - 8 targets over 2 days

I did Basic Training at Fort Polk, LA, in 1971 and those silhouette target dimensions appear to be the same as the "fall down" silhouette targets on the ranges back then. We were instructed to shoot at the top of the head at 500 meters to allow for the .223-cal. bullet drop at that distance. I also loved shooting long distance best.
I qualified "expert" with the M-16 and would have with the M-14 except I intentionally missed a couple of long-range targets so I could also wear the "sharpshooter" badge on my uniform.
Oh yeah, we also had feral pigs running around the far ends of the ranges...and were told to always check the shooting pits for snakes before climbing down in them.
We had four kinds of snakes at Fort Polk: rattlesnakes, copperheads, cottonmouths and coral snakes. Each one just a bit deadlier than the last. Luckily for me the only one I ever saw was what looked to be about a 6-foot rattlesnake in a pic on the front page of the post newspaper the first day I arrived. The soldier that killed it was holding it out at arms length and the tail was dragging on the ground.

For those that do not shoot competitively 512S, is being super humble and gracious. His post puts him in a very select small group of folks. Well done Stroker.

Did Polk for basic and AIT. I didn’t like the pigmy rattlers

I did basic in 71 at Ft Ord Calif. Then went to Aberdeen Proving Grounds for 45B school. Learned to repair and later shoot every small arms the Army had untill 1975 when I go out.
Later in 1987 got to assist agin with the M-1 doing sabot ammo test. Jumped the ball ammo from 3000 to 4000 fps. Really brought that old *** kicker to life.
This was in NM so got to kill lots of rattlers also.

Been shooting since I can remember pretty much. My old man shoots 600. I went with him once. Shot his 6BR. Best I did was maybe 8 or 9 inch group.
1.996 is a great group!

Only good enough for 3rd place.
Two of my targets had sub one inch groups in that competition.
The dude that won had five sub one inch groups.
That's is good as it gets for me, probably never be able to repeat it.

I actually spent more time on this range...

and saw more of this target when I was in.....

My weapon was 'forgiving': you could move your point of aim and the round would track when underway. But it only had 1m resolution (it hit within 1m of where you were tracking as it bounced around when one of its 30 radial guidance rockets fired)

Looks like some of the training aids when I went through Dragon school

This is all well and good, but he said 75 ft./25 yards.
