1974 Duster Build Thread

Man, that looks incredible! Bet you could sell those! What do you have in it in time and materiels? Awesome skills.

Grand total? Probably $60 not including the gauges. I got the plexi from my girlfriends dad, vinyl is very inexpensive but I had to order a 3-3/8 and 2-1/16 hole saw. Might redo this one with red carbon. I also need to put the turn and high beam indicator lights In. I’ll get you a finished picture maybe this afternoon. Time was about 3 hours. Using this one as a template I could probably pump them out a lot faster.

I think they look killer. If you wanted some spare income its right there.

Thanks guys! I haven’t posted an update in a few days but since I have the interior stripped down I thought it would be a good time to work on my headliner. Patched it up with some gorilla tape and covered it in 1/8 foam backed black cloth. I might have pulled the sides in a little tight so I’m letting it relax before putting it up and will post some pictures tonight.

A few pics

The a-pillars and sail panel are pretty self explanatory, but how does this go in?

Your talkin to a convertible guy, sorry. BTW why not change your avatar to your current build? Its worthy of you.

Maybe once I get it out and wet sand it and have it outside the garage. For now the challenger gets me where I’m going so I’m showing it some love. New pics coming soon!

Finally got a chance to put it in and put my new wheel on. Pulled the glove box door off to wire up the heater. Still haven't sourced a set of heater cables. Was thinking about making some out of a choke cable? Anyone try that?

Feeling very accomplished today! Put the bulkhead through, connected everything up, threw the disconnect on the back and VOILA, I actually had power- and what’s better is it actually cranked and my volt meter is working. At least I know I got the gauge lighting right. Tomorrow I’ll put a gallon of gas in and see if it will fire. Fingers crossed!

Well... it was the big day... my folks came over and I cranked it over with the key! Flooded it initially- second go round it fired right up! The good news: heads, tails blinkers and dome all work, so I got the light wiring right. temp, oil pressure and volt meter work so I nailed some of the gauges. The BAD: wicked misfire with a little throttle and tach isn’t working. Going to disconnect the tach from the coil tomorrow and see if that’s the misfire? Not really sure... or maybe I fouled a plug when I flooded it? It’s only missing on the left bank.

Update! If you guys didn’t see my other thread, I installed my ready to run 440source distributor yesterday and fired it up... no misfire and sounds great after advancing the timing a bit. It was nice to cap off so many wires and tuck them away in looms: no more distributor plug, ignition controller or wiring, ballast resistor or wiring... much much cleaner... only issue now is my tach isn’t working now! I’ve seen a few magnetic pickup tach adapters... is that what I need? Anyone encounter this problem?

Update! One step closer to getting it back on the road! At least I have a place to sit now! Also pulled the shifter, rerouted the cable so I can get a cover over it and mounted it STRAIGHT.

Quick update and Ill get some pictures tonight! Carpet is in, seats are in, and shifter is covered. I have the 8-3/4 torn down right for the new third member install and I figured I would pop new seals in it while its apart. Wrapping that up tonight.
Hopefully picking up a windshield tomorrow and I will actually be able to take it out!

Well I couldn’t quite wait... so it didn’t go far- just out of the garage and back... but it was fun

Also didn’t mentioned I got my grill repainted. Polished up some chrome and got the heads and tails in- all of which are working- to my surprise.

Well, did away with the old wheels today, new ones required a small spaced to clear the hubs and I swapped out the studs for 2” to get a little more thread on the for the lugs to bite. Going to build my rear seat delete plate tomorrow, using the old aluminum one as a stencil. Probably going to cover it in the same 1/8 foam backed black as my headliner and package tray.

Don’t mind the velocity stack. Came with the car- I will run a regular pie tin but with it backed it in looks neat from the street:lol:

Rear wheel. Trying to find some decent take off tires to wrap it for now. Don’t imagine my first set is going to last all that long.
