Is this a 489?

Ahh ok, I ask because i have a 741 with 323 (in 67 cuda) and a 489 with 323 in shop. I was thinking of 355's and wanted to change between the 741 and 489 cases.
Thanks for clarifying
You can as a complete unit.

But if you change components of it (the pumpkin) you may have issues. 742 cases used a Dana 4 spider center. The 489 used the Cone type center. The over all diameter of each is different. Never had an issue with 4.56 and the small pinion but when changing to 3.55 I got pinion rub on the cone center when trying to achieve gear pattern in the 742 case.

Dam, I never had any problems, even with 2.76 and a cone type. Anytime I seen the pinion eating the suregrip I assumed the pinion nut came loose and the crown sucked the pinion into it. In a 742 or 741 case and cone suregrip. Kim. Ofcourse my memory ain’t what it used to be.

If the components of the pumpkin are matched then not an issue.

In my case I misplaced my buttons for the Dana center and 742 case and just put a cone unit in from a 489 case with the 4.56 ring gear. Was not an issue until swapping in 3.55 gears. Ended up having a shop shave the pinion head on a lathe to get the clearance.

Probably should have sourced a new correct center but all worked out just fine.

Dana centers in 742 cases used a thread spool rub block with a roll pin in two pieces, where Cone types used a captured rub block.

My memory sure ain't what it use to be, but I'm sure I have built 741 and 742 with the cone SG. I don't remember having a issue with the pinion rubbing the SG case. But as we all know you never say never!

I will find the thread to remind you.

This only happens when you install 3.55 gears in a 742 case with a Borg Warner cone sure-grip. The pinion head is just thick enough and the outside diameter of the sure-grip is just large enough to collide.

Oh yeah, I remember now. Sucks getting old! To date I have not encountered this, I hope I never do. But if it did I would turn the SG case down. How did the set up work out in the long run?

Just fine! I would have turned the case but did not want to redo the carrier bearings again.

Just returned from a little cruise! Going to load it in the trailer on the 4th as we are leaving to Carlisle the following Wednesday. Never been there and looking forward to it!

Man I'm jealous, I've always wanted to go there.

Been there many times. You'll have a blast.Even better if the weather is good.

I grew up 45 miles from Carlisle and have never been to Chryslers in Carlisle. but I left for the Air Force when I was 21 years old and haven't lived there since.

It's a long haul from Georgia. Have fun Gerald... maybe one year I'll join y'all.

Thanks Cass for clarifying that. Likely a one in a while deal but may be something that should asked on order. Love the gears and outcome though! The fish is very enjoyable since.
