73 Scamp 5.7 Swap

Man, I haven't! I'm hoping to this weekend. Had it out on the street a little. Seems to run really well. Just haven't been able to give it the goods just yet. Also have to do some carb tuning. The weather is good today. May have to sneak it in the shop, do some quick tuning, and take it out.

No time today. Rain tomorrow. Hopefully Maybe Wednesday, for sure Thursday.

Well, finally had a chance to tune and run this thing. I gotta say, it's a bit of an animal! More than enough for an 18 year old kid. I have a 3.91, spooled, 8 3/4 with 002 and 003 super stock springs in the back. Comp engineering 3 way adjustable drag shocks. Some cheap *** 235/60 15 HP4000 tires on cop wheels in the back. Traction is limited, to say the least. You can feel the springs trying to work. I'm really liking it! Now it's off to the strip here in a few weeks to get a real indicator of power. All in all, very pleased with the out come.

That is great News for sure, congrats and keep us posted on the numbers it runs at the track

So did you have to cut the trans tunnel at all, or was there enough room with the 904. Any bending or modifying the body?

Zero body mods. 904 fits as it would from factory .

I am using the 31000. Just a tick over six to fill the system, I have to run an oil filter re-location. This keeps the sump a little low, but, the oil is away from the crank that way. I went with a parts store house brand 5w20 full synthetic.

Did you have to replace the stud on the main cap to support the dip tube? Read on the Schumacher web site car 5.7 needs this stud replaced. True? Do you know?

Did in my 6.1

Some say you don’t need a new stud. They are yield to torque. Factory says replace it. I did. It was cheap, went to the dealer.

Yes, I did replace the stud. As 73 cuda said, dealer item, very in-expensive. Like 9 bucks.

Well, this is the weekend. Going to see what it does. Couldn't have picked a better one. 90 degrees with heat index over 100. Cut the water out of the air with a knife. Real world for NW Iowa. Hopefully we get some decent numbers. Don't really know what to expect. We'll see. I'll post results on Monday. Have a great weekend everyone!

Well, I wish I had something better to report. Best run of the weekend was a 13.89. Engine ran great, just didn't seem to have the power. Density altitude was 5,100. 81% humidity, 28.something barometer. Forget the temperature, over 90. Spun like hell with street tires. Friend borrowed me some 26×9 slicks. Cured the traction issue. Because of the heat, they were running the show through pretty quickly. Not a lot of TnT runs. Ran a class on Sunday to get some runs in. Sunday's first run was the best. Went into bracket mode and didn't try or change anything. I did pull plugs to see how fat it was. To my surprise, it really wasn't. Wondering if I should have tried a little more timing. 20 degrees Max from 4500 on is where it's at now. Also wondering about centerline on cam. Maybe took some bad advice.

it should run way better than that, the car weight alone should have put you down in the 11"s. hmm some things to think about for sure, but a blast to drive that's cool enough for me

Yeah, it weighs 3140. On the local elevator scale. I'm scratching my head for sure. I know the weather conditions play a big part, but, I agree that it should have run quicker. I'm going to dig through my notes to see where I put the cam in at.

I put my 6.1 cam in per the factory spec i found online. I was told unless you are doing aftermarket cam do as the manual said and that should gain best performance. I hope to have all my pluming and oil lines done this weekend. I have been caught up in a very latge honey do list at my house. We all know how that goes.

Yes, yes we do, lol. Maybe that's my problem. I was told it needed to be 6 degrees adv. for the 5.7.

Yes, you definitely have more power there somewhere. My 04 5.7 is bone stock stock with exception of of 6.1 intake and a boat anchor 545rfe I run 13.58. Pretty consistent. You’ll sort it out. At least you’re having fun!!!!

Tried fitting up Jeep SRT 6.1 manifolds today. Started a new thread about that.

Hi 408 swinger,

I found something last night that could be happening to you. I was hooking up my throttle body linkage and had my son press the peddle and found out I did not have full open throttle. something to check on your motor.

I should be starting it this weekend!!!
