Have a 98 5.9 magnum engine I want to use with a 69 904 trans, what torque converter would work for me?

I'll go ahead and ask so the experts can chime in. Stock engine or cam swap/upgrades planned? What's it going in or what rear tire size and axle ratio? Any upgrades to the clutch packs etc. ?

Don't know. I believe that the 360/5.9 usually came with 727 's because they were a truck engine. I did have to use a special flexplate because those engines are externally balanced.

stock engine, basically just a street car.

if the trans is a 69...then any converter that fits that trans will work...but but....

are you aware of the external balance required of the 360 magnum...they are not the same as a LA 360.......best to find a 5.9 magnum flexplate.....and remember the balancer must be for a 5.9 magnum...

I've got the original flexplate that was on motor. everyone says it has to be neutral balance, like this one.

converter needs to neutral balance....weight is on flexplate...

Any neutral balance 904 converter will work if you're using the magnum balancer and flex plate. But what stall speed would be best depends on many factors, like camshaft choice, rear gears, tire size, etc, etc.
Behind my 5.9 is a 904 from a '74 318 Dart, I'm running the stock converter I got with the trans. works fine for everyday driving around.

I guess I don't understand this neutral balance thing, aren't all converters balanced.

Some are neutral and some are balanced. It depends on whether or not the engine internals are internally or externally balanced.

Yes. Neutral balance means the converter is balanced as is with no weights added for an externally balanced engine. Converters made for externally balanced engines have weights welded to them.

The exception is when you use a flex plate that is made for an externally balanced engine. Then, you can run a neutral balanced converter on an externally balanced engine, because the difference is made up in the flex plate.

I have the stock converter that came with the trans I have and you are saying I could run that converter no problem

Yes, one hole in the flex plate will need to be opened up slightly with a file so all bolts will line up. ( Converter to flex plate bolts)

Your answer was given here;
New build

You still haven’t answered any questions that would yield not only an answer but a good and accurate one at that.

If you do t want to answer the question, get a 5500 stall and have fun!

I did state this was basically stock 5.9 for on the street. I was looking for which converter that was available would work for my setup. Have found only a couple of vendors that even cary coverters for 904 let alone neutral balance. didn't want to spend 500 for a street car.
followup, bought the one from jmk i listed above, on to next problem

Do you care to share with us what this street car is? We love projects here!

1972 dart, a /6 automatic car. Pretty solid car, going with a 5.9 magnum and 904. Picked up a 3.23 center for a 8 3/4 but still need housing. Going to Columbus in aug. hoping to find some parts i need there.

Hello Rob. Would I be correct to in my inclination if he were running 25-26 inch tires on the rear like pictured that he should run the high stall factory converter with the 3.23 gears? That would put him in the 2450-2600 rpm bracket on the highway allowing for up to an inch of tire growth at speed. It would also mean the OP could swap cams in the future without killing the off the line response.
