Hi guys.
Quick question. Do any of you know whether the insulation on the floorpan under the factory vinyl for 1971 year Valiants had asbestos in it? What is this stuff? It kind of reminds me of coconut fiber. Did any of them for any year use asbestos in the floorpan insulation?

I'm in the process of ripping my flooring out to replace with new and I want to know if I should dispose of all that insulation special or not.

Thanks!

Not likely. Although still in wide use in the 70's, it's cost and natural properties made it used in high heat applications. No reason to use it in automotive carpet insulation, when jute and burlap is so much cheaper. Reliable means to test in the field are limited, so to actually know, you'd have to take a sample to a lab or testing agency.

Don’t get it tested. They will bag your car and your property it sits on. You will have to change your avatar to BUBBLE BOY.

You need a special bag to put it in. a linear low-density polyethylene bag to be exact. Can be purchased here...

No, they do not contain asbestos. The ONLY part of the car that MIGHT contain some small traces is in the brakes. But we're talking extremely small traces and you're fine unless you snort the dust. I'd be far more worried about mold spores when ripping the carpet out than anything else.

Brake shoes and clutch linings and maybe automatic transmission bands and clutches

The brakes I knew about, and I was careful when I did them a while ago. As for mold.... hehe well here it's so dry that mold can't survive for long. I'm actually really allergic to black mold so if there is even a trace I start sneezing my brains out. On the bright side, it appears that my floor pan is completely rust free.

and don't ever ship one of these cars to austrailia with the brake shoes still installed. they'll impound the car and crush it to keep you from sullying their land.
also, if there were asbestos, you could soak it with water, making it non-friable, and throw it in the regular trash.

I would be more worried about hantavirus from rodent droppings than mold.

Believe it or not, I have a bigger problem with rabbits than mice or rats. They get up in the engine compartment and chew the wires. My mothers car had a spark plug wire get chomped on her 4 banger. When they opened the hood, lo and behold bugs bunny was there under the battery tray eyeing them. They drove the car around all day with him in there ;D

Do a google search for rabbits eating automotive wiring, you would be amazed at the number of links....
