As mentioned we are cutting our satellite since we have not had the TV on for more than a couple hours each week. However, there are some series such as NCIS, etc... on network TV that we enjoy and will binge watch when we have a lazy boring day. So looking for recommendations on DVR's that work good, wont break the budget and works without a subscription...... And Go!

Hulu Live works well for about 44 a month. No term IIRC.

Local channels and 40hrs of DVR with past episodes available or most network stuff.

Netflix you can watch NCIS from season 1 and a lot of other shows. We are getting rid of direct tv. You can share Hulu and Netflix with other family members are son pays for the HULU and we pay for Netflix

We have had Sling tv for about 3 years. Pretty happy with it. Ranges from 25 to 40 a month pending package, and they have a DVR for another 5 bucks I think. We dont do the DVR because most shows we watch have the "on demand" option.

Isn`t hulu a satelite set up ? I almost hate direct tv and att (wire) internet, especially since they merged , but dont want the internet to go out w/ every passing storm , like direct TV does..

Sling TV is what we have. Hulu is similar.
They are both internet based, not satellite. They use an internet connection to stream to your TV. (either through a smart tv or a amazon/roku device)

We have pretty decent internet out here, so it wouldn't go out unless the internet was down. you do need stable internet though. if you have a "charged by the data" internet like a verizon mifi...then sling/hulu wouldn't be for you.

Our internet is actually a "wisp" which bounces a signal from ground tower, to ground tower (rural area thing) so its not exactly the fastest, but its more than adequate to support sling.

Thanks, but over my head-------------
Not hooked to internet , too mch b.s. on att as it is , dam sure don't want it messing w/ my tv.

We currently have att/DirectTV. The internet is att wired to the router. All of our devices (laptops and smartphones) run off the att router.

Direct tv is only for TV. To get away from satellite TV you can cancel Direct and keep att internet (or cancel both and get a different internet provider), then use a smart TV or, as Johnny Mac said use a Roku device.

Our att/Direct TV contact is up in September. We'll be going to a streaming service.

Get An affordable internet package $40-60 and WiFi you phone and laptop to it, hard wire TV and a landline.

Basic Talk phone $12 monthly
Amazon prime comes with the yearly subscription $112
Netflix $8-14 monthly
Roku, buy the device $20-120 and get free access via the internet connection
CBS $5 monthly

You can add and delete and pay channel on a monthly basis, Binge on HBO for $15 month then stop it.

With the On Demand channels you dont have to DVR the shows will most always be available

Roughly $60-80 a month for phone, internet and TV

Do you have an HD antenna?

We've considered a Roku or other device such as a fire stick.
Our internet is $40 for life (dsl)
Cell phones only no land lines much higher but no idea of cost.
Yes we have a HD antenna, and as soon as we dump Direct TV (July 21) I will be hooking that, since its mounted on the dish and I could use the same Coax from the satellite.
I'll have to look into those other channels as needed, but really most stuff is on local TV that we watch.

Thanks everyone for the input, interesting to hear what you all are using.

Kitty and I have been without any satellite service well over ten years now. Cable doesn't run way out here. We have over 2500 DVDs. When we see one we like we'll either go find it at the 3 dollar bin at Wally World or I'll get it off EBay. I've been thinking of transferring them all slowly to flash drives.

We've started doing that same thing as well, we picked u a couple 2TB external hard drives and saving music and movies to them. You have a whole lot more movies than us though. LOL
