hey everybody. I just got ahold of a 727 trans for my ‘69 Dart swinger. Purchased a precision performance shifter for it. After speaking with PPP about the install, they told me that a front exit shifter cable is going to be the build and I could use some help here. I am not sure how to run this cable since it is front exit. Should I be drilling a hole for the cable and bending it around to fit? Also do I need a front side bracket if it’s a forward valve body? I got a push to upshift which is what I was told would get me the PRN321 style, 3 being my drive. Anyone done an install like this? Please help!!!!

If I had to do over I would definitely get a rear exit one. The biggest problem I've had with front exit shifters is the cable gets mighty close to hot headers. I've actually melted though one. Was racing and used an aluminum soda can and a couple of zip ties to get it working for the rest of the day.

Or u can insulate and keep it off the headers to start with / common sense------

Alex.here is some photos of when we did a front exit. Drill you hole on the passenger side allowing the cable smooth turns around the bottom of the bell housing.See the red cable.

Even thought this is on a slant six 904,you will get the picture.it will keep the cable away from the header. I also made a heat shield by the trans bracket. Hope this helps.

Do you have the cable running in from the front where it attaches to the shift lever? I’m wondering if getting a reverse valve body would help

Yes, it attached to the front of the transmission/shift arm. This does have a reverse manual valve body. The shifter was B&M. It also was the same when it had a forward manual shift valve body.

The interesting thing to me is that Precision calls for a rear entrance cable on all the diagrams. And with the location of the Bellhousing in relation to the lever and the TCI bracket I have, I don’t know how I would manage that.

Can't say, Just wanted to show you what was done for a reference. Like I said, we were using B&M products.

check, so no matter the what direction the cable leaves the shifter, it still needs to connect to the trans from the front. your using a standard direction valve body so i would run it like the instructions, out the back not the way the guy on the phone said. don't know if he misunderstood or what, but they haven't sold thousands of those with the instructions all f'd up.
how long of cable do you have. you'll be surprised how long you actually need

This is what I got for install. Shifter installation I can handle. Just can’t figure out cable routing

I run a front exit cheeta shifter, comes around the right side above the headers, under the tailshaft housing and back toward the front w/ turbo actions supplied bracket. I insulated it where needed and braced it to keep it suspended everywhere when I installed it .
common sense--------------the cheeta is a hair awkward to me still yet, takes some getting used to, but may be the best shifter I have ever owned .

My TCS shifter cable runs out the rear. On a Cope Racing Transmission reverse pattern MVB 727. Rear exit is definitely easier.

I’ve got a 5ft cable to go front exit to trans. Will I need longer? I’m guessing I probably need a 6ft or so? Also I have a TCI bracket but it seems a little high up for the lever. I know the linkage is supposed to basically straight

my winters shifter came with a 6ft, 20+ years ago. barely long enough. i just got a10 footer for this next time i use it
