I just got my 66 Dart on the road. I notice that it takes more turns on the steering wheel just to turn. My question is I am new to gear ratios what did 66 Dart steering box gear ratio come in from the factory? Any recommendations on a gear box with no power steering.

The factory manual boxes, IIRC, are 24:1. There are aftermarket firm feel boxes available in 20:1 and 16:1 ratios. I have talked to members that like a smaller wheel with the 20:1 box, most find the 16:1 box to be a little much on steering effort.

Sounds like you have the 24 to 1 manual box with 5 + turns lock to lock which is standard. There is a 20 to 1 ratio of about 4 + or turns or so and the 16 to 1 ratio about 3 + turns gears available for the manual boxes. Power steering is about the same as the 16 to 1 ratio. They say the one with the 20 to one is a great compromise between the 24 and 16 to 1 ratios

Just checked my 24:1 grandma steering, just a little over 5-3/4 turns lock to lock.

Smaller wheel? I do have the original steering wheel I took it out for a spin yesterday and drove into my driveway and my wife says be carful don't hit her car. That's when I noticed that I was turning and turning and I did get a little spooked I might hit her car.

Sounds like I will be seriously thinking on replacing it and go with the 20 to one gear box any recommendations on brand manufacture?

I have two freshly built Firm Feel boxes, one 20/1 and one 16/1. I'm in portland if your interested. Send me a PM.

In the past, you could get the gears alone but IIRC they are more than a complete box now.

We offer a stock replacement 24:1 but we do offer a 16:1 quick ratio as well. These are new production with no core required. The 16:1 is our most popular box. Many of the customers that I have talked to love it. The only time that you will see extra effort is in parking lot type of situations. Meaning less than 5 mph. With the mopar forums members discount the steering box is $269 and shipping is free within the US 48 states

Manual Steering Box 16:1

Easiest and cheapest is to develop your steering technique for the car. You can try 'slow hands' quick wheel or a big reach method etc and see what works best for you.
