Hey folks!

I have really strong vibrations at 2800 rpm and up.
In part throttle the steeringwheel is even shaking.
It is in neutral the same as driving.
Driving over 60 is real bad.
But sometimes even under 60 partthrottle is very bad and all starts shaking.

I swaped the rearend and I did the whole engine but still there.
I changed the engine mounts and installed a TCI Rattler but still bad.
I tried without fan, powersteering pump, alternator aaaand it's still bad.

I don't think it't the engine because I totally changed it (heads, cam, lifter, piston,...) and it's still like before.
Changing the ignition curves (MSD E-Curve) was also no big help.

The vibration comes through the floor I guess because sometimes I feel like I got massage seats in my Duster...

I had to adjust the flexplate a litlle because it didn't fit but I think it's no big deal..
Maybe It's the converter but I don't know what could be wrong with that.
It's ballanced and for internal ballanced engines like my 318.

I don't know what to do anymore..

Thanks anyway.

Had that in a cuda 340 auto one time. It was a vibration like you have .Turned out to be the dowel pins in the block for the trans pushed towards the front. Knock them back and lined trans up and it went away. Something to check. Good luck?

The pins are good.
The trans is in position.

Could the converter be somehow wrong for the engine?
It’s a Hughes 27-20 with 2000 stall.

If it does it in neutral, I would be looking at drive train. Mounting points something loose etc.

In neutral but car still moving? Or sitting at RPM? Have you tried running vehicle on a twin post rack with wheels off the ground?

In all gears. Sitting and moving.
I don‘t think it is something past the converter.. so i didn‘t try to lift the rearend..

The joints are 500 Miles old but they are not moving without driving..
The vibrations are still there.
Doesn‘t matter if the car moves or not

Have you removed engine belt or belts? What kind of flexplate are you running?

**edit, saw you removed engine ancillaries ***

What size engine is it? If it’s a cast crank engine it may be externally balanced. If u adjusted the flexplate obviously u have the wrong plate or converter. Is there weights on the converter? What plate is it? Can u post some pics? Kim

318 all internally balanced.

You can feel the vibration even at idle.

The flexplate is a cheap one from rockauto. Just ordered a TCI 145600.
I hope that helps.

Should a flexplate fit fine or is it normal to adjust them?

Should bolt right up. No adjustment.

I hope the new flexplate fit.

I also just bought a new converter..

In 2 weeks we will see..

I had a similar issue with my 70 Swinger. It turned out to be a clutch pressure plate that threw a weight, or wasn't balanced properly. Id have the torque converter checked, see if it has counter weights or if it looks like it lost a weight. Stuff like this is frustrating, but I got real good at having that 4 speed out in less than an hour, with a lift and air tools of course ;)

If it does it in neutral it's the engine. Period. 318s would have neutral balancer and convertor.

But the converter and the flexplate also rotate in neutral.

I think Moper meant engine and connected parts that turn when the engine is running but the car not moving.
If your wheel shakes AND it vibrates or shakes in neutral you have two problems and not just one.
That converter/flywheel issue sounds like a good start from what I have read of your posts.

You may have a bent front rim, tire bubble, or a worn steering part.
Even just a worn idler arm can cause tire shake also when it allows both wheels to sort of wobble from tow in changes.

I'm sorry it took me so long to reply.
Actually there are some updates.

I just balanced my crankshaft.
My 318 runns smooth a f (it even has a rattler balancer).
It has been balanced with flexplate and balancer mounted.

I have redone my 8 3/4 (new bearings etc.)

I changed my tranny mount (prothane).
Before my tranny was offset.
Now it lines up great ;)

I have also redone my 904 because the new tci converter exploded.
So i installed the good old hughes converter.

AND STILL...
now at 70mph (before 60mph) the car starts to vibrate and the faster you go the more it shakes the hell out of you.. :/

Slightly vibration are noticeable at lower speed but nothing that bothers me.

You were right. I had two problems.
But now there are vibrations at higher speed only..

I wouldn’t of put the old converter back in. Have u ever checked the pinion angle? Could have a bent rear end housing. If ur seats are vibrating it from the driveshaft back. Just cause ur u joints are fairly new doesn’t mean they are good. Maybe their too stiff in the yoke or shaft. Put a new stock tranny mount into it. Kim

I have new tires on 14" rallye wheels.
Last summer balanced.
I don't even have trim rings.
Some say BF Goodrich tires are crap but i don't really know.

What I did so far:

Balanced crankshaft (no vibrations in park - engine running smooth).
This made things a lot better ;)
But still vibrations while driving over 60.

Suspension (except leaf springs and high jackers) done.
New rear end (before 7 1/4, now 8 3/4 e-body rear).
Balanced driveshaft.
Aligned my 904 tranny.
No improvement.

New Toyo tires (instead of BF)
This was a slightly improvement but no game changer.

Symptoms:
Over 60 mph.
Sounds like: VROOM VROOM VROOM.
The faster you go the more intense it becomes (not faster).
Comes through the floor and the seats vibrate like massage seats.

What I am going to do next:

My tranny loses some oil, so this will be the next thing to look at closely.
I’ll keep you updated.

If somebody had tranny vibrations and fixed it, let me know...

Could be the torque converter. They do weird stuff.
