I'm looking for a Rust Preventative for bare metals, especially for items that have been blasted and are now bare steel or cast iron or even differential bearings. I've tried several fluids but nothing that really does the job for any length of time. What have you used that works?

Had very good results using Fluid Film

Fluid Film. It's available at O'Reilly.

Roy, sorry I missed your text. My phone was dead and I just now saw it. We had Kitty's last appointment for pre-op this morning in Macon. Probably not gettin back into town until next week. I'm not in a hurry if you're not. If you like, I can send you the money through Paypal so it'll at least be paid for. Thanks Roy.

I use Tri-Flow, has a little smell at first but goes away !
Use it on my Firearms, and or any metal surface that u want no rust. Works great and lasts long time . C

What do you intend to do with the parts and how long will it be?

I just use Loc-tite neutralizer.

I even use it to simulate a bare metal or galvanized finish by simply not painting over top of it, and I use it on tools that have started to rust, and on fasteners.

Amazon too. I'd always buy from the local parts store whenever possible.
The local resto shop recommended this stuff for the areas that I couldn't paint on my new subrframe connectors, etc. It's weird stuff! Made with lanolin...

Good old WD40, works great on everything. WD40 has wax in it, when you soak something down the solvents will evaporate and leave the wax coating in it and it wont rust.

I've always used white lithium grease in the spray cans. Cheap, easy to get anywhere, and easy to clean off later if need be.
I'll have to check out the Fluid Film stuff.

Have tried most listed here. Try-flow, WD-40 work for a short time, Gibbs lasts longer. If you want an anti-rust to protect friction surfaces (flywheel, brake drums, rotors) then stay away from oily products as they will be absorbed by friction materials. Gibbs is better here. Wherever I can I try to paint the surface with a similar color to really protect it. Just one man's opinion.

For to be painted metal, bill hirsch rust preventative.
Otherwise LPS rust inhibitor. Stuff is not cheap but it is like cosmoline .

Mainly for a rebuilt third member after everything has been blasted Wd-40, Blaster penetrate, Blaster lubricating spray only work temporarily.
Thanks for all the replies.

Are you looking for something to protect from flash rust before paint or something permanent? I use Ospho on bare metal after blasting unless im going to paint it right away.

I'm interested in preventing rust on media blasted cast iron when it is not going to be painted. Like when I build a third member, on the inside of the case not the outside which I paint. When it is not going to be used or put in service for a month or two.

This stuff is gnarly, leaves a yellow film on anything. Has to be removed, wont come off if handled. Get this pump bottle has about 2x more in it than the spray.

Damn so many choices. Guess I'll have to conduct my own field trials. Thanks for all the suggestions.

FWIW, From gun care article;

“With this evaluation behind me, I an unlikley to condsider the WD 40 specialist as a gun care product because it wasnt marketed as a cleaner (not meant to be a cleaner so I cant knock for that) and it didnt rank terribly high for lubrication but I will be using it for many other outdoor applications and tools where I want to delay corrosion. The column of my drill press, the top of my table saw, my lathe, saw blades, hand tools and lots of other tools will benefit from its ability to protect from rust.

Frog lube impressed in both lubrication and corrosion inhibition but I wonder how good a cleaner it is? The mfgr website touts it as a cleaner but I am uncertain. (only speculation on my part)

Hornady’s One Shot strikes me as more of a cleaner than Frog Lube and WD 40 specialist (speculation on my part) and it certainly performed well as a lube and corrosion inhibitor.”
