Makes me ask the question, how many gears/speeds does a transmission really require to me "efficient"? Nine seems like overdoing it a little to me.
The answer is that maximum efficiency is achieved by an infinite selection of transmission gear ratios. That’s why continuously variable transmissions are the ultimate goal. However, CVT technology hasn’t advance enough yet to make it universal.
