The answer is that maximum efficiency is achieved by an infinite selection of transmission gear ratios. That’s why continuously variable transmissions are the ultimate goal. However, CVT technology hasn’t advance enough yet to make it universal.
You get maximum efficiency when engine HP and torque are held in their most efficient RPM range with the transmission adjusting for the speed and acceleration demand.
