Here’s the hole location on my 1970 Duster door. It had a remote non-sport mirror on it. I haven’t checked the sport mirror cable length yet, but assume they are the same.

now that's more like where I thought it should be mounted and not in the hole ahead of window crank in door panel in this picture!
