Hey all. I've got a '92 diesel 518 (618? Dunno.) non-lockup transmission, and we're kicking around the idea of putting an Ultra Bell on it, to use behind a big block in my friends car. What I do not have are any spare gas RH valve bodies, especially one that's a non-LU type. I suppose when I take this VB apart to clean & inspect it, I could pull one from another trans to compare internals, but I honestly don't want to tear into an already finished transmission...and there could be casting differences, etc, that I won't notice. I'm aware that Transgo sells a special kit for the diesels, but I haven't called them yet to see what the reasoning is for that. Has anybody ever tried a diesel VB in a gas motor application? Or been into one enough to know how different they are?

the governor housing and weights are larger > od. than a gas

you would need heaver/ stiffer springs in the shift valves.
I went the other way... swapped gas v body into a diesel trans to increase shift points.(swapping to a "P" pump)

on my 72 Dart I used a JW bell on a gas 518

Dragins right. It’s not just the VB diff. Governor is different too. I haven’t looked into what it would take to make a diesel governor work with a gas engine. You may have to swap the governor housing and install a gas trans housing

Never considered the shift points. I haven't driven a diesel in years, didn't even think about that. I have a rebuilt gas O/D unit, so that takes care of the governor... and I have a complete (but cracked, thanks to a guy with a forklift) gas valve body that I could steal the shift valve springs out of. I like the way you cut off the SB bell, beats the heck out of a sawzall and a 4" grinder.

the out-put shafts are different diameters, a gas governor will not fit a diesel shaft, (to small)
also different years have different spline pitch for the planetary gears

I'd just swap the whole O/D section out, and put the diesel one on the shelf. Unless it gets so involved that finding another gas trans makes more sense, and leave this one alone.
