I have a 1972 dart that had a slant six, I was given the car by my sister after she didn’t change the oil and the engine blew up. The slant 6 was takin out later, along with the tranny and the driveshaft. I have a 360 small block that I want to put in it, I think that dart has the small 7 1/4 rear end in it so im looking for a 8 1/4 or a 8 3/4. I’m trying to get together everything I need. The 360 has aftermarket heads I think some people call them x-heads but im not surewhat there called, all i know is the thing used to run great, here is a video when the engine used to be in this truck:

I’m thinking about getting this 73 dart with a 318, it should have the bigger rear end that I need. I know that the 72 and 73 have the same track and wheelbase length.... I also need and a v-8 k member as well as the drive shaft. I’m hoping it that the 73 has a 727 in it the owner is unsure what it has and doesn't seem to know that much about the car. Any suggestions or what else do I need that this 73 wouldn’t have ?

No my friend. Love the video..engine is torque monster!!

The 73 Dart will have everything you need to do the V8 swap, except possibly the rearend. A lot of the 73 318 A body cars had 7 1/4 rearends with big bolt pattern axles. 73 340 cars got 8 1/4 rearends. I think it was 1974 when they went to 8 1/4 rearends in all V8 cars.

JDMopar, Thanks for your info! and yah Ive been looking at 73 darts and ive seen it both ways, there was a 73 dart that they claimed was all original with a 318 and had the 8 1/4 rear end. But ive also seen a couple with the 7 1/4 rear end. Like i said before The dude who im looking to buy the 73 dart from doesn't really know much about the car when I asked him about the rear end he said he wouldnt be able to tell what type of rear end it has because he doesnt know how to tell.... anyway looking at the condition of the car do you think the rear end would be in good condition along with hopefully the transmission driveshaft etc...? I mean because that cars not in bad shape but its definitely seen better days! another question for you do you think it would be worth the buy, if the car doesnt have the bigger rear end?

Yep....if it runs good, it's worth what he's asking. Try to get him to come down to $700 - $800 if you can though. Even without the 8 1/4 it's worth it, because you're getting the good spool mount k frame, disc brakes, and everything you need to do the V8 swap. I'd install a new timing chain, and knock all the old freeze plugs out and clean the rusty goop out of the motor, and then install new brass freeze plugs....paint the motor and install it! You can sell the body for half what you pay for the whole shebang, which will recoup some of your money and give someone else a good deal on a decent body at the same time. If you have the time and patience, you could part it out and make all your money back.

JDMopar yah thats what I was kind of thinking, But Im not planning on using the 318 thats in that dart tho for the swap, I have a 360 that we pulled awhile back thats been sitting in my shop for awhile. Id probably just try and get that 318 running, take the tranny and anything else that I need so that I could put the 360 in my dart and then sale the 318 and whatever else I dont need from the car.

X Heads are not aftermarket, they are the stock 68-71 340 heads with 2.02 intake and 1.60 valves.
