The oil pan gasket seal is seeping on the 5.9L engine in my Duster. It has spool mounts. It is stock LA pan and there is a windage tray inside also. If I drop tie rod links, can I get engine high enough to remove pan. Hate to pull engine just for that. Front seal is not leaking; so hope to just do pan gasket. Thanks for the help and advice.

It would be easier to access by dropping the center link, however, the oil pan may interfere with the k-frame, you may need to loosen the motor mounts and lift the front of the engine for easier access,,,

Lifting up the front of the engine will allow you to get the oil pan in place without knocking the gaskets off location... Without jacking up the engine, it will be hard to install the oil pan and gaskets while maneuvering around the k-frame...

Thanks krazykuda. I have been wiping oil off pan & lower areas between rounds of drag racing to keep from dripping at line. That is a pain, but so far made it thru 2 days of racing.

I now that pain. You’ll need to do all that work to get to the pan & it sucks.

While your tightening up the pan, look real close at the seal at the rear and make sure it isn’t ding pushed out or twisting as you tighten it up.

If you have the time, drop the shield for the converter so you can get a better look as you tighten it up.

I do not like 360 oil pan gaskets. The other small blocks are better.

If all goes well today, I’ll be doing mine. But the engine is out. My only benefit.

Depends on the pan, I cut a small notch in my cross member for my kevko pan. Drop the center link and I can wiggle the pan off and on without lifting the engine. Just have to be slow and careful when reinstalling.

Totally agree with KrazyKuda on this one.
Plus with the engine up a bit you can get the front pan bolts and timing cover bottom bolts in a lot easier. (odd and tight angles otherwise)
I did a complete bottom end bearing replacement (crank and rods) along with the rear main seal, oil pump and pan gaskets and end seals by using this method.

Take the distributor cap off so it doesn't hit and break it when you lift the motor.:D

LMAO! I didn’t do that and I should have know better.
Crap happens...

Thanks for more tricks & hints, especially dist cap. My dist is real close to firewall.

Update: Pulled the pan with engine in the mounts. Pan would not clear TTI headers even when bolts loosened, had to pull out R torsion bar to spread headers. When dropped the center drag link, then had room to remove pan. I used the magnum style pan gasket and the rear pan seal has to fit in slot before pan goes up. Since magnum gasket is one piece with end pan seals, I made special studs with wire cotters to hold up pan gasket. That worked pretty slick. Overall, it would probably been quicker to pull engine than to do it like that. I found reason for leak that I will show in other thread, LA Oil Pan on Magnum.

Did you use extra sealant on the front corners of the pan where the LA gaps are or just hammer them out flat?
