So I was looking for a cheaper alternative to the $45 each dash speaker from retro sound, and I found cheaper ones on Amazon, but I stumbled across something saying to not use new speakers with an old radio because new speakers are 8ohms resistance and the old radio is set up for 4ohms. Can anyone shed some light on this?!? Thank you!

I used to use 8 ohm speakers for 4 ohm radios all the time. Never experienced any issues.
Most car radios of the 60s and newer have solid state amplifiers. These act as voltage sources, with very low impedance output. As long as the load exceeds the minimum specification, then the amplifier should perform without issues. Using an 8 ohm speaker should not result in any loss of quality, distortion, reduced frequency response or affect the system itself. Actually, the load presented by a speaker to an amplifier varies with frequency anyway so the recommended speaker is the best middle ground selected by the radio manufacturer.

You can use higher ohm speakers with a lower ohm amp with no problems. They won't get as loud as a matched set of speakers would, but that is generally a non-issue. You will eventually have problems running lower ohm speakers with a higher ohm amp... at least that's what the stereo gurus say.

The specs on those speakers say they are 4 ohm. Your stereo might say somewhere on the case what impedance it is. Most car stereo stuff is 4 ohm, while most home stuff is 8 ohm. You shouldn't have anything to worry about.

These were the ones I was looking at.
My radio does say solid state, I just never heard of having new speakers being an issue before!
Thank you!

Hello SwingingDart,

I am currently gathering parts for a complete ground up rebuild of a '69 Barracuda 340 Fastback. Here's what I've got going on in the stereo department:

I'll be using twin Pioneer 3.5" 2-way speakers (60 watts with bass blockers) in a custom dash mount that MoparMat2000 made. The outside is the exact same size as the factory speaker so it fits right in and has the 2 holes cut for the speakers (Pioneer TS-A878).

From Year One, I ordered kick panels that come with 4X6 Pioneer speakers. YO has kick panels with no speakers, panels with cheaper speakers or the top ones with the Pioneers. I believe they had either 4" round ones or the 4X6's. I read the 4X6's have a better sound than the round ones. I originally ordered the bare panels and purchased my own speakers, but could not find speaker grilles that fit, not even on Pioneer's website or places like Crutchfield. For some reason, 4x6's don't usually come with grilles and I sure wasn't going to have speakers in the kick panels without grilles to help protect them.

I then installed 6X9's 3-way speakers (again Pioneers) and put them in the fastback sail panels. I'm now deciding on if I want to use the factory radio and have it converted to modern electronics and inputs for an IPod or other devices to play your music and you can also get bluetooth installed to use your phone over the radio/speakers like a modern car. Or you can get a radio from places like Retro Sound that looks like the original radio and does the same stuff as above. Third option is to leave the original radio in the dash and wire it up so it lights up, but put a hidden modern radio with a remote control in the glovebox, under the front seat or possibly another location.

Sorry so long and don't know if that helps you any, but there are options like Mike69Cuda said above.

Dan, I bought some grilles for my 4x6 kick panel speakers. I’ll dig up where they came from.

I did about what you did, except I put speakers in trunk divider. Sounds great. My dash was hacked already for aftermarket stereo, so I just put a new Bluetooth one in there.

Bought these for $18.00 on amazon with grilles

I’m not highly skilled on pasting links on my iPad, so let me know if you can’t find it from this.

Hey Mike,

Yeah if you could find that info, that'd be cool. I, or you, could pass it on to MoparMat2000 since I gave him the 4x6's I purchased w/out the grilles.

My dash hasn't been cut and still has it's original AM radio in it.

I'll admit I was kind of nervous about putting them in the sail panels, but worried about damaging the speakers when the divider was down. I'll put DynaMatt (or similar) on the backside of the panels and the front will be carpeted, so there shouldn't be any vibration. I also used speed nuts for the self tapping screws so they'd hold tighter.

Thank you,
Dan

Man, that's cool, wish I had seen this a few weeks ago when I was putting all my speakers together. Now I just need my radio choice, an antennae and probably an electrical system since the cuda is stripped all the way down to a bare shell now, lol.

Looks like I bought the speakers with grilles included, so my memory works about as well as everything else about me....

I used a dynamat clone there too, worked great!

Screw all that crap and buy a Bluetooth Bose unit to sit in the car. Play all your favorites and more cheaper and great sound you take with you anywhere! Phone not included! JMO!

Probably the easiest way by far, but seems like I never do stuff the easy way. Also obsessed with recreating the 68 cuda I had in my youth.....

I know that memory thing too, or at least I used to, lol.

Good to know on the Dynamatt type stuff as I can go ahead and do that and have them ready. Thanks.

I had a Bose amp and 4 speakers (50 watts per channel) in the 69 fish. Tunes were great but While it sat they were all stolen and ripped out of the car causing far worst damage.

The smaller Bluetooth units give awesome sound to match and for hours! Pick it up when you stop and get out and no one wants to steal your crappy AM original! Just another thought!

Somehow my 4 year old flip phone (as in not even being close to "smart", lol) doesn't play music, have any data, etc., so it doesn't do much. It does have a flashlight! No camera though. I've tried different ways to get it to play music, but so far it only got stuck in my 8-track, wouldn't stay on the turntable and wouldn't fit in the cassette or CD player. I'll probably need a special adapter, lmao.

That’s funny!

And when you want to just hear a fine Mopar scream down the road, leave at home. But cruising the country roads demand some tunes sometimes.

You can’t beat Matt’s speaker adapters to replace the stock dash speaker. Super easy and a multitude of speaker choices.

Ironic that you should mention that, as I posted this on FB last night (and everybody, please remember that MoparMat2000 puts up with this type stuff from me almost every day, so buy him a drink if you ever meet up with him, lol). Anyway, here's my tale of woe regarding tunes, speed and Mopars:
"Ok, I have to admit I've seen all of or parts of the movie "Baby Driver" more than I can count. I love car movies, but when I first heard the title, I thought it sounded like a lame movie and didn't worry about it. The first time I saw it, I said, nowhere near as bad as I thought it'd be. Then I watched it again and like I said, quite a few more now.
If you have seen it (I'm not saying it's an Oscar winner), then you may recall there is a scene where Jamie Foxx talks about "hex songs". As much as I listen to and love music, I had never thought of a hex song. Unfortunately, I now know they do exist and what mine is.
Saturday night I made about a 45 minute drive and on the way Classic Rock 106.9 played Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit". I thought do I really wanna hear that on the "classic rock" station?
About 4 hours later, I was driving back home and another station played it. My mind (who has a mind of it's own) said why am I hearing this twice within 4 hours? My mind shouldn't have such thoughts because I got my answer right after it went off.
Hellllllloooo blue lights, aren't you so pretty? Are you for me? Yep, and so is this yellow piece of paper. So, another reminder to me not to let my brain wander, as sometimes small things get lost in the wrong thoughts area of my skull.
BTW, when I started my surprisingly fast Chrysler Town & Country (at least according to the VA State Police) to leave work this afternoon, guess what song was on 106.9 again?
I set the CC to the posted speed limits ALL THE WAY HOME."

Poor Matt.

Thought Matt was in Texas?

If he makes speaker plates I was unaware!
