Different driveline angle on balancer to output shaft?

Why would I be getting different readings on driveline angle between the balancer face and the trans out put shaft? Balancer shows -2* @ 88.1 but the output shaft shows -3* @ 87.0. WTH don't I understand. Which is correct?

Just went through this on my 73 Sport project. Crank pulley showed 4 degrees down. Tail shaft showed 3 degrees down. I went with the crank pulley. Guessing the tail shaft machining may not leave a perfectly flat surface?
 
The front driveshaft yoke centers the transmission output shaft when it engages the rear bushing in the tailshaft.
I didn't think of the rear bushing. I did check for play in the output shaft but couldn't get any. I'll use the dampener then, thanks.
 
nah, I recalibrated the gauge and used a little level to make sure the gauge was plumb.

No and this right here is the problem. You can not measure degrees off plumb with a canted instrument. The instrument MUST be plumb in the dimension opposite what you are trying to measure

So far as the tail bushing, I doubt there would be anywhere near that much difference., although there certainly could/ will be some

Also possible the balancer flange may be a bit "wobbly" You might wrench the engine 1/4 turn at a time and take readings.
 
I'd use the tailshaft reading because that is where the driveshaft is inserted. If the driveshaft was attached to the balancer, use that reading.

Using a flat side of the yoke might be even better.
 
Tolerance on those units is .2 °
I calibrate those for a living.
 
No I calibrate the Digi-pass protractors and units like them. They are only good to plus or minus 0.2 degrees. Find a level surface and recalibrate it. AGAIN. Make sure there are no bumps on the magnet side. You can sand it on a flat surface.
