My daughter was driving her 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee when she lost power steering. She opened the hood and the only thing left of the pulley (only 6 mo old too boot) was the metal part pressed into the shaft. She lives 50 miles away so she towed it to the local Dodge dealer. 2 days later she got a quote. They wanted just over $1000.00 to " change out the PS pump ( also 6 months old) and the pulley. She td them where they could install the pump and towed the Jeep the 50 miles. 12 minutes the reminents of the pulley were off. 12 minutes the new pulley was on. 5 minutes the new belt ( they kept the old one) was on. Fired up works like a champ.

I wore gloves but was in my desk job shirt with out a drop of grease on it.

Hard to believe there is still dealers or shops out there that still try to take advantage of people (especially) ladies. Good call by your daughter:thumbsup:

Shall we go into my dealership story?....

Nellas van was using oil, only 30k miles on it. There’s a TSB on it so the bride takes it in. They tell her it needs to go through an oil study where they change the oil, we take the van in every 1k miles for 3k and they check it. Sure enough, it uses a qt every 1k miles. Now mind you, the bride has to take it in because I’m at work, so after the 3k the bozo at the dealership tells her that 1 qt every 1k miles is normal and they wouldn’t be doing the valve seals. So, I call my buddy, who just happens to be the engineer on the 5.4, and who wrote the TSB, get a copy and go to the dealership and lambaste the entire service dept. I told them that I would go in and tell every salesman that they needed to inform every potential purchaser of a vehicle that has a 5.4 that it will use a qt of oil every 1k miles. Now the tune changes and of course they are going to do the valve seals under the TSB, and the clown who told my wife all of this just stood there with a stupid look on his face and didn’t say a word.

Oh, they also told my wife that it would take 3 days to do the job, but low and behold I get a call after only 6 hours saying it was ready, and did I want them to change the oil, because it wasn’t part of the TSB and I would have to pay for it myself. I told them to leave it outside, don’t F’n touch it again and I’m on my way. Brighton Ford in Brighton, Michigan. You have been warned.

( the oil change was part of the TSB by the way)

I can understand them wanting to replace the pulley and pump. That puts them and you in a better position regarding warranty. You get it all instead of one piece. But 1K is worse than highway robbery. Did you get that quote in writing? If so, you might drop the BBB a note. Normally, the BBB is used when some sort of damage is incurred, but they might be interested in a quote that's that far off the map.

Lessee, they wanted big money to replace dealer-level parts on something that's 24 years old?

Nah, say it ain't so.

Sarcasm aside, I'm surprised they even looked at it long enough to give you a quote, and I'm guessing $6-800 of that quote was just a NOS pump assembly.

Now the call is made by the tech.
Pulley failure is likely from some old damage or it has just seen better days. To install pulley is the easiest thing, and not much money can be made on it.
So tech imbellishes, knows its easy money and hopes customer bites.
I flat out refuse to replace a part that hasnt failed.

But i do wish the would have taken a closer look at the flex plate when trans was out. The breakage was pretty extensive.

Is it V8 or I6? Check the belt tension and pulley/serp alignment. You don't want a recurrence.

It is a V8 5.2. the PS mounting bracket , pump and pulley were all replaced with new, (pump is a rebuild)

The pulleys are lined up proper. The belt was older but in good shape, the tensioner was working properly. I suspect the 6 month old pulley was just a piece of crap.
I hate plastic fiber parts.

Bad Dodge dealer outing...

I would agree if it was the original pump but it was clearly a reman complete with sticker, not to mention my daughter informed them of that

She would have replaced the pulley herself but I beat her to it when I got home from work, wanted to surprise her. She was a bit pissed at me but thankfully.

Wonder if pulley cracked during first install?
Ne pump, new pulley, bet it was a bear to assemble.

Sounds good. There is an 'ok' mark on the belt tensioner that you can observe at idle.

I have had 3 ZJs, all 93-95 (gen1) V8s. The PS pulley on gen1 is steel so I re-use it if possible. The bracket is a known weak spot, never had trouble tho. There is a bulletproof aftermarket bracket available. There may be a metal pulley available, but I'm not totally sure on that one.

What are you saying.... I can't press on a pulley!

I press on PS pump pulleys with a bolt, nut and a tripple stack of large washers.

I screw the bolt all the way into the shaft, then start tightening the nut till the washer stack just bottoms on the shaft end. No pressure on the pulley, and if the center distorts enough to separate from the fiber pulley then there is a bigger problem.

Because there was a chunk of plastic found (ironicly with the part number on it!)
And the metal center devoid of plastic I suspect it just let go.

There may be a metal pulley available, but I'm not totally sure on that one.
When I tried to pull the oem pulley off the oem pump 6 months ago the lip on pulley that the PS pump pulley tool pulls on ripped off.

I can get an OEM pulley but it had to come from Detroit and would take 5 days, interestingly it is the same price as aftermarket

What you need is the cast bracket and steel pulley from 93-95 to eliminate the non-metal, although the later bracket can be modded to align I'm sure.

When I replaced the brkt I bought a mopar from dealer

Gen1 and gen2 brackets are different, but all the mounting holes are the same. It's the depth.

Monday my daughter is going to look it the intersection it broke at and see if she can find any other pieces

Guess I should have waited for the engine to cool down before changing the spare belt for the new one.

Looks worse that it feels
