ProComp/Speedmaster aluminum heads

As for the guides....... I don’t know if the quality has improved with them in recent years or not.
But that certainly was a point of concern with most Chinese heads at one point.
I had some ProComp BB heads used on a tractor puller that the guides were absolutely trashed in with fairly short run time.
I believe there were some geometry issues with that motor as well, which I suspect was at least a contributing factor to that.
On the other hand, I’ve had some Ede heads come back to me for multiple freshenings through the years, and Ive never had to replace a worn out guide.


From my perspective, as someone who doesn’t have to pay to have heads done, my preference is to pay a little more and use the Ede heads.
They have good quality seats and guides, the valves are decent, and I don’t worry about the springs and retainers(if they’ll work for the combo they’re to be used on).
The guides are always too tight, so I get to hone them to my preferred clearance...... instead of they’re a little loose, and it is what it is.

But, I realize with the cost of the RPM heads, plus a little machine shop love..... they too are getting kinda close to the TF heads in terms of cost.
 
My machinist buddys sees good almost great numbers out of em. Not chevy numbers but 320+ with minimal effort.

OOTB, not on my car. Id buy bear and have em done but then again im lucky and dont have to pay for machine work....

I would not reuse your valves. They wont be right.

I cant remember what the parts csme out to do build a set. My buddy gave me the mumber but i forget.

I will be buying a set most likely.

I think with a max effort port job we could see 350+ CFM.

If your budget is Speedmaster heads, and not TF heads....... the choice has already been made.

Plenty of people are using them.

I bit the bullet and bought a set of trickflows..

Agreed, and I have the tools to take the springs off and feel if the valves seem sticky in their guides and I can pour some solvent in the holes and see if they hold. And at that point call Speedmaster and then ask what the deal is?
My cam is only a 506 526 lift with .019 Lash with Hughes 1.6 to 1 rockers. I can't imagine the springs that are supposed to hold a 600 lift are going to be any problem even if I step it Up to a 573 lift which I was considering..
Thank you again for chiming in with your hands on experience with these heads. I am trying to create a spot here where someone can say they got a good experience or bad one from them.
 
Just think! you can write your own review. After a careful look, some lapping compound and new 10 degree locks.

Those 320+ numbers are better than a W2 can do... I’d be very suspect of that flow bench.

350 cfm could support 700 hp.... has anyone seen those numbers on a SBM on anything but an old Nascar or pro stock motor?

It takes a hell of a GM head to get those numbers, too.

His flow bench is about 15 feet from my shop.

It doesnt take a 350cfm head to make 700. The W5’s i had were on several benches, one said a touch under 300, another said 320’s
All i know is they went 140 at a little over 3200 pounds on superstock springs. Thats 700

I just went back and looked at our texts. He says over 320 is not an issue oit of the small block speedmaster heads.

I knew a guy that could get really high numbers too... but then again he flowed them at 10 in depression.
I'm not talking **** because I haven't done that with that head I just have to see it to believe it. No disrespect, it's just a tall order for a ******* standard pushrod location head

You spend the time and you'll get there, but it will come with above average work.
Ive had 291cfm @.530 out of a 915 sb head...320+ well...like i said

Nah its not like that.
If you had said he cuts through the pushrod pinches and has to tube them, and even the head bolt sometimes... then me ,personally, i would more easily stomach that.

I have no doubt, he is getting a good number. Some can, some can't. I think most here are just questioning because they haven't really got into these heads, but they will. I've seen the numbers Pittsburgh racer has achieved with these heads, pretty good numbers.
 
Me personally if I was going for a Max effort I wouldn't be starting with the Speedmaster heads to begin with. hey what the heck if you can put them and get some good numbers out of them but definitely what I wouldn't be looking for out of the Speedmaster head. But I would be hoping for something I can run and get some decent result from. I think anybody expecting something huge from this kind of head with longevity and reliability is going to be disappointed. Again though I would hope for some kind of longevity under a medium Operating Conditioning..
