painting seat belts

-
I assume you meant painting the webbing material. If the purchase of new webbing is not possible, You could try SEM Color Coat paint. It is specifically designed for plastic and other interior materials. However, is buying the webbing and sewing up your own a possibility. I bought webbing, took the old ones apart carefully for patterns, and sewed up my own on the wife's sewing machine. I used the same type of thread, so I know they are PLENTY strong. I did the whole thing in one day.

I used clothes dye on mine , dumped two packages in and used very hot water . they came out good

HMMM I would not have thought that clothing dye would soak into the Nylon webbing material. Interesting. I'll have to try it.

I have a 72 duster. just dropped the seats at legendary, and was hoping to get seat belts done before I get the seats back.

I was wondering if you were just brightening up a set of old belts or you wanted to change the color all together. Dye or paint will be a temporary fix but I know restoring belts is expensive.

years back when I would go mopar nats and take a big box of old seat belts, sell them to co call Snake - oil or owl whatever it was. $100 pretty good $$ back 15 yrs ago! maybe still in business?????

no I would not attempt to change the color with the dye. have used it to dye and change color leather chaps even.. but leather is way different than nylon webbing.

$1000 to Legendary for new seats belts?? someone sells some high priced tools!? ha

Wouldn't dye or any chemical compromise the integrity of the belt? I know that with baby car seats, you're NEVER supposed to do anything like this or even wash them in a washing machine.

Rit Dye will work very well to recolor your seat belts. I did it with a pair that I had and they came out fine.

X2 went from red to black and looked great.2 packages of dye and about 5gals of water in a big kettle and let it cook for a hr or so.

This post scares the hell out of me…….is your wife’s sewing machine a full industrial machine and did you use proper seat belt thread? If not then a domestic machine couldn’t use thread heavy enough for a seat belt. Belts aren’t sewn up with just any thread, it’s made for that purpose…..I’d be surprised if it’s not illegal for an unqualified person the work on belts anywhere in the States……it’s up to you, I’m not telling you want to do, but being in the motor trimming trade I’d say these belts are putting your life on the line, and everybody else that rides with you…junk them and buy new!!

Just concerned for your life…………..

x2 This is what they preach in I-CAR collision training, along with trash them if they have any nicks/broken stitching or abrasion anywhere, but.......

RIT dye worked awesome for me and penetrated excellent from red to black.

Found out for sure that the powder RIT DYE will NOT dye seat belts. I ended up getting a can of Duplicolors Spray dye and that worked very well.

I have done several sets using dye and it worked great. Very hot water with double dose of dye then rinsed in ice water which sets the dye.

BE SPECIFIC: Powder or liquid RIT DYE? Powder didnt for for me- and i followed the directions, added salt and vinegar.Duplicors spray can from Advanced for $6 w/discount was far easier and worked MUCH better.

you do know that you just cooked cotton or rayon thread and weakened it where it was sewn together? I hope those seat belts never need to be used since they are compromised. not knocking your choice but it is dangerous. I work at a trimmers shop that does custom interiors for Lincolns and he just shudders when customers tell him they have done that. Most of the times he turns down the job after that statement.

Decided the spray dye works better, and not totally convinced the RIT would compromise the belts either.
