javascript (gonna die in 2020 anyway with Chrome walking away from it) is used on a few buttons as you found out: new post, refresh, post editing....cant just block it on the website. I can't visit this site on my phone: half the page is Ford ads and one every other thread posting. I just get on here at home on a Win10 PC with uBlock Origin running in chrome. No ads at all along with no pop ups.
