I've been thinking on ordering pst's 16:1 manual box.has anyone tried it and what do you think of it.i will be tracking it occasionally but mostly street use

At slow speeds (below 5 mph) it will required moderate effort like in a parking lot setting. At speeds above that it is very easy and very responsive. We have sold 79 of these boxes this year so far and have had zero complaints. But we have had people call up to say once installed they love the results.

Thanks

mines still in the box but i anticipate much steering goodness

I run a 16:1 manual box on my Duster, which is also my daily driver. It also has 275/35/18 tires up front and +6.5* of caster, both of which have a significant effect on increasing the steering effort. A narrower front tire and less aggressive caster setting would be more common and provide an easier steering effort than what I’ve got. I still don’t have any issues driving the car, and it sees plenty of parking lots and slow speed driving just like any real daily. Yes, the steering effort below about 10mph is heavy, but it’s not unmanageable (at least for me). And at anything over 25mph it’s a piece of cake and very responsive.

Full disclosure, my 16:1 box is from Flaming River, so I don’t have one of the PST boxes specifically. But the ratio is the same and that’s what determines steering effort and response.

Thank you. I bit the bullet and ordered one. I'm not running that big of a tire or that high of caster so think it should be good

Just curious, does a manual 16:1 box still require less effort than a factory power steering box with no assist? Because I had to drive my Duster around (briefly, just a few miles to get back home) when my old P/S pump failed and there were times I was afraid I might rip the steering column out from under the dash. The smaller Grant steering wheel obviously didn't help but I figure most of you here aren't using a giant factory 'school-bus' wheel anyway.

Yes, a little bit. The ratio is the same but you’re not working through all the extra stuff in the power box. So there is more drag with the power box that isn’t being boosted.

I run an reproduction Tuff wheel on my car, so smaller than some of the other factory wheels but probably an inch or so larger in diameter than a Grant.

Just an update for anyone intrested I got the box and solid sleeves installed and got some time on a road course here and it was day night difference. Smooth responsive and really let me know just how bad my old one was

Any plans to offer a 20:1? My Dart is street/strip so I'm not sure I'd want that fast of ratio as 16:1.

This sounds right but in my experience, with similar alignment specs, the difference in steering effort between a 16:1 power box with no assist and a manual 16:1 box is insignificant. In parking lots/k-turns, etc, they're both heavy enough to be inconvenient. The manual box seems to have ~40% less slop than the non-assisted power box though.

I run a 330mm Momo wheel on mine which isn't helping.

The 20:1 is on the list to do but not as of yet.

Did you get the 20:1 boxes yet? I would like to purchase one???

We are still in the design and pre-production phase at this point. I do not have an eta of when they will be available at this time.
