cost of engine blocks

can anyone tell me the average value or what you would pay for a 440-400-340 block that has had no cleaning or machine work done to them i guess a good core ? same with 340 J heads big valve ? thanks
 
440s in my area of Maryland go from 3-500, that’s standard bore and low mileage. “ low enough not to have a big carbon ridge at the top of the bore” 383s a little less, I bought a good complete running 1969 383 from a d300 truck for 500 with the trans and associated parts...
 
I would at least drop a bore gauge and see if they are standard bore or oversize. A clean standard bore 340 block will bring good money. I would say around $400-$500. Not sure on big block stuff. I have a couple 440's but I bought them so long ago. Same with all my 340's. I paid next to nothing for them 20 years ago. They were very hard to find even back then. I would say 340's are MUCH easier to find now with the internet.
 
No way would I pay 500 for a bare block. That's what you're asking, right? Basic long block, yes. Bare block maybe 100 bucks. And since the 340 is almost a unicorn now, you cannot lump them in with the rest. They usually start out around 300 and go up for a bare block.
 
There was someone here recently that was trying to sell a thick saddle bare 400 block without main caps for $700. Now, I agree that the thick saddle is the one you want for high power but $700? This was on CL. I don't know if he ever sold it.

Man, that argument is totally splittin hairs. You can do 700 HP out of any big block block. It's not like the ones without the thick main webs are gonna break before the thin ones. I don't think it makes that much difference. Sorta like ALL the 8 3/4 cases are about the same strength. Some people think the 741 is weak. It's a moot point because they are all so close in strength, the difference isn't arguable to anyone with common sense. Same with the 400 blocks. It's all a bunch of forum and magazine bullshit.

Agree , I paid $500 for an untouched 440 w/ the trans still bolted to it , pulled as one piece.
You don't have trans to engine alignment problems that way either .
 
I haven’t had a person around here come down any less than $700 for a rusty crusty high ridged 340 block. The best deal I have ever gotten was from a member here @rmchrgr

440’s? IDK
 
The big blocks around here are 250-300....340's IF you can find one are way over priced, usually 500-800 or more...for the money, much better off getting a 360 block (200-300)
