need cam suggestion, Low buck project stock 1968, 318. has headers.
i just want that lope, bump, bump sound.
not worried about anything else
(cheap helps)

well, the best way to get that is a whiplash cam from Hughes..... Look it up on their site

well Ron, from Omaha, your 68 318 better be of the 9.5 Scr persuasion, or don't be surprised if it turns into a pos.
Wikipedia says that you are at about 1000ft elevation, so before you get carried away, you better run a compression test.
To run that lumpy cam and actually be able to drive it, you may have the added expense of a hi-stall TC and some big rear gears, else it will be real embarrassing when a kid on a bicycle blows your doors off.

im old. at my age its all about the sound

read:Hughes Engines
The entire cam kit.... cam, lifters, springs..... You'll get your sound with the components.

Yes, while not the "cheapest" it will certainly get the job done. Aren't they also ground to take advantage of stock valve springs? I think they are. At least that's what the ads say I believe. That doesn't mean it's "optimal" with the stock springs......just that it "will work".

I think it's a good choice for what you're after Ron. I would also recommend the whole kit, as it's pretty important to match the springs with the camshaft. There are also videos on the Hughes site too I believe with the Whiplash cam sounds.

yeah, just the cam is 173.00. I just gave him the link for the entire cam kit - cam, springs, lifters... but he can go to the web site and troll around..... other than that, just get an old MP 292/508 grind, that will make it thump... LOL

I would call Ken at Oregon cam grinding. He's old and has been doing this for a long time and actually Grinds the cams. HeHe m be able to recommend something that would allow you to use your stock Springs. On the cheap I would recommend any streetmaster 318 or Holley performance dual-plane intake you can find. Edelbrock 600 carburetor or 600 Holley. You will definitely need a new timing chain and gears. $25 cheap, $50 very good, 75+ great, at least go very good...

I think that's kind of expensive?

The old mopar 292/508 cam sounds wicked but its probably a bit much for a 318. I had one in a low comp 340 and it did ok on the street. You also need to be careful going too big if you have power brakes.

I think the Lunati 268 would be good. It's even "a little" big for a 318 but he said he wants sound. That cam would sound good and run way better than the 508 or Whiplash. Cheaper too.

I mentioned that cam as a joke .. lol

I thought you were joking! cuz That 292 needs a lot of Scr even in a 360.
If it was me, I think I'd be looking for a Thumpr/Whiplash whatever; The HUG 1326 installed at 104 has an Ica of just 53*, so your early, Hi-compression,318 will still have some torque left over. And with 111* of exhaust duration, it won't be that hard on fuel. With 46* of overlap and headers, it should idle similar to a stock 340. And with 223* @.050 intake duration, it will make a bit of power too. All-in-all a good choice, and well worth the buy in, for this application..

I'm interested in the cam grinding process. How can they take a small cam like a stock 318 and grind It to make it bigger?( higher lift) do they weld to the lobes and add material or something?? Sorry if this is a stupid question but i really dont know and i really want to know lol.

To take Material off the base Circle.

With that lunati cam he is gonna have to spend a lot of money to make it work with stock heads. I have a size smaller and had to cut the valve guides , new valve seals, and get new springs and retainers It will give him the sound but it's not exactly budget.

I'm sorry I still dont understand. The pivot point is the center if the bearing how would cutting the shaft make a difference? The bearing size Is still the same.
