Anyone try one of these? I have to move the column and coupler and remove the pin to change the lower column seal and this looks easier than the new seal and metal cover.

I'm being something of a hypocrite here as I haven't done it yet myself but I really think you'd be better off putting in an aftermarket universal joint steering coupler. Just my opinion, but I feel this is one place that merits an upgrade from stock on these cars.

I am surprised at the trouble most people have with the gasket and cover that there are not more of these around. My plan is to replace the PS on my 65 with a 20:1 manual box. I'll use my PS column, a rebuilt PS coupler with this boot, and one of the $125 or so adaptors. I'm just trying to simplify the car a bit.
 
That's great had no idea they were made. Getting the metal covers crimped sucks!
 
I installed one one my 70 Cuda some years ago. If you are not hung up on the correct look, then I highly recommend buying one.
 
Screw all of that. I use the wire retainer. Ten bucks on ebay SHIPPED, versus $25 plus shipping on the Bergman piece, install without removing the column, and after you add a grease fit to the bottom of the coupler, allows the water and trash OUT of the coupler when you pump in fresh grease.

Installs in seconds and you never have to dink with the cover again.

If that Bergman piece melts or cracks, you're in trouble as the guts are exposed at that point. Pull the whole deal to replace. Yuck. I'll take the MOPAR solution.

Edit: Just noticed, if you buy three or more, they're under $9 a piece. Damn, what a deal! And I ain't even the one selling them!

Don't try and take the pin out..disassemble your column shaft.It's just a C ring and the shaft will slide out.
..that wire retainer can be made at home in a few minutes with some 11 gauge rod or a coat hanger with a bit of careful bending.
 
Not sure if a coat hanger would do it.Mines is made from some type of spring steel and they are only $10 so no savings to be had by making your own.
 
A piece of stainless gas/rig welding rod would probably work but a person would probably bend up more than $10 worth of it before getting it right... No doubt the factory designed couplers are more than adequate for most applications, but I still prefer the aftermarket solution, even though it is an expensive alternative.
 
yes $10 US plus shipping plus exchange on the dollar is only $35 or $40 Canadian.
I just get no pleasure out of buying things...but i do making or restoring them.Motor mounts,
front spring brackets, exhaust brackets..trans linkage, brake and fuel lines...etc.
And it does add up
 
I agree there is nothing better than making your own stuff, especially when a lot of the "custom" stuff we get for these cars has to be massaged or otherwise modified to fit.

So you're saying remove the seering wheel, get the turn signal switch out of the way, and slide the shaft out of the top of the column? I still need to get the shaft pin out to get the new column seal on and then back in again to make the coupling work
