Hi, does anyone here have a 1964 273 4 barrel intake? I am just doing a minor upgrade to the existing 273 in my Plum Crazy 64 GT. I don't want to get into changing the heads on my motor. If I wanted to get into that much work, I would just put the motor that Moper built for me in it. I want to keep that motor in my Pearl White 64 GT. If nobody has one, can someone tell me if I can just use a Performer Intake or do I need to drill different angle holes in the manifold?

There are no original 4 barrel intakes from 64 cars, they didn’t have a 4 bbl option in 64. However, a 65 intake will have the same hole angle as a 64 motor, and there are some few and far between aftermarket intakes that have the old bolt angle. Remember too that 64/65 have a smaller bolt thread size 5/16” vs. the 3/8” from 66 and up. You can use any newer aftermarket intake, but I would open the holes up a bit and use a conical washer like on the exhaust manifolds. They’re thicker, and have a rounded top shoulder that would allow the bolt to apply even pressure.

Why would you have to open the holes up if the hole size is larger? Just wondering.

You do know that adding a 4bbl to an otherwise stock 273 2bbl combo is almost a complete waste of time .... right?
You'll have far greater results with adding more rear gear. Far greater.

The angle is still different, and 1/16” difference is not enough to account for the angle difference. It’s not much drilling, only slightly bigger.

Have to disagree with you AJ....did just that on my Dart 273, and now it runs WWWAAAYYY better than with the 2bbl. Yes, it's no race engine, but for the street cruising, it's much nicer.

You can get a Edel Performer intake and a good 3/8 drill bit. Get the drill going and them lean it over to match the old hole angle of the old heads. Use 5/16 allen bolts and a good washer so the edges dont dig into the intake. I ran one like that for a year without any leaks.

You can only use a 65 intake on the 64 273 .The 64 & 5 have a different bolt hole angle than the 66 and up heads and there was no 4bbl version of the 273 in 1964 but the heads are the same from a 64 and 65 but with the 4bbl you need heavier springs if you are going with a cam similar to the commando 273 4 bbl motor .

Thanks everybody, I have a performer intake that I thought that I was going to put on my other Dart, so maybe I will try the drilling procedure on that and see how that goes. I'm not trying to make it a race car, just trying to give it a little more power. I'm not changing the cam, at least not right away, just want a 4-bbl and dual exhaust to make it sound better. I will NOT be racing it, even around town, just give it a little rev and chirp now and then. If I was going to do any more, I would just find a 340 and install that. I have had my share of 340s over the years and I know what they are capable of doing!

Pishta, what would I use for a gasket if the holes are off size? does that matter? Would I be advised to use stainless steel washers, since they would deform a little when tightening down the intake bolts?

I also don't want to add too much rear gear if I want to take the car anywhere distant. 3.23 is what is in my white dart now, and that is about max for highway driving, as far as I am concerned.

3:23 is perfect I think, In my 65 Dart 273 904 I’m at about 3000rpm @60mph. Yes the D4B is aluminum. Dustin

Because of the different angle of the bolts from the early vs the late... The larger hole helps compensate for the different angle...

The standard intake gaskets have 3/8" diameter holes and are thin enough where you should not have to make them larger to put the bolt in... It's the thickness/depth of the holes in the intake that you need to compensate for...

The biggest improvement on a 2 bbl 273 or 318 would be to add dual exhaust... The stock single exhaust is very restrictive and going to dual exhaust really wakes them up...

Then go to a 4 bbl and then possibly a cam will make the next gains in performance...

My white dart has dual exhaust and it sounds amazing! And it seems to have plenty of zip to it.

Ok I made a mistake; I said ;

At the 2bbl power peak, somewhere around 4000rpm that 4bbl might be good for 12/15 hp. Now with 2.76s, and a 2.45 first gear, and 25.5 tires that would be .......................... ~43mph.
But at 2000 rpm the 2bbl is still bigger than the engine needs. At 3000rpm the 2bbl is still sufficient. So the power increase might start at say 3200/3400rpm with 1 hp increase......... which is ........... 34+ mph.
In my world spending 300 or 400 on that kindof ( ) is "almost a complete waste of time".
And if you somehow manage to break traction and get one wheel wound up, yippee!
Do yourself a favor; before bolting on that 4bbl, do some timed runs. Do enough of them to cement the performance. Some 60fts, some zero to; 20,30,and 40 mph.
Then after the 4bbl is on , repeat the tests, and report on the reduced times.
Lessee at 2800pounds 12hp shows an ET improvement of oh looky-looky about a full second in the quarter, for SS-unlimited suspension, lol. Where did that come from? Well it ain't in the 60ft, and it ain't in the zero to 20 or 30 mph. Oh I see it; at about 40 mph the engine is starting to make a lil extra power power; lessee I'll guess 7 or 8 hp. So all of that improvement happens after 40 mph. This is so exciting.
Yeah so sorry, I made a mistake.
I also said;
You'll have far greater results with adding more rear gear. Far greater.

Gears on the other hand will be an INSTANT improvement, as they unleash the torque that is already there. 3.23s will be an improvement of 17% over 2.76s, did I say instantly? Yes as soon as you stomp on it. No waiting until 1hp at 34mph. There is no one single improvement that you can do to your car, short of supercharging, that can touch gears..
What is the improvement with the 4bbl you ask? Lessee 1/180 if your 273 is tip-top =less than 1/2% at 34mph growing to optimistically 12/180= close to 7% at 44mph.
"Mr Trebec"; I'll take gears for instant 17% at 1mph going to 17% at 43mph, thank you very much. What's that Alex? "posi you say?" No I won't be needing that just yet, but if you have one cheap, I'll take it.
So what does plus 17% feel like? Oh, IDK, like swapping out the 273 for a 318 maybe....... Well maybe not quite.
Course if you already have swapped in 3.23s then you know what it feels like. And another 17% would take 3.73s.
Again, I apologize for my candor..

Well, thanks for the math lesson! But I already own a performer intake and a holley 4 bbl sitting on it now. I understand that there will not be any drastic performance increase, BUT, I have put four bbls on sbcs that were 2 bbls in the past and there was an increase in seat-of-the-pants feel. And right now, that's all I really care about.

Go ahead and put the 4bbl on it. 273 with 8.8:1 compression ratio and 180 factory hp. Gain another easy 20 hp, puts you at 200 hp and then have fun opening up the secondaries for the added performance when you want it.

The tone of the engine will deepen as you are giving it the fuel that it needs. Another trick, put on light aluminum wheels like slots, less rotating mass to spin up. There is another instant performance boost right there.

Seat of the pants, heck yeah . . .

Just curious if your 273 has a single or factory dual plane 2 bbl intake.

If it is a dual plane they give good low end torque, and they make the simple 2 to 4 bbl adapters by Mr. Gasket to work with the existing 2 bbl manifolds to get your 4 bbl on there. They work quite well, surprisingly.

The nice part about your 2 bbl manifold is that it matches the small port 273 heads, so no turbulance there. Good port flow is key on the 273s/318s.

Enjoy . . .

Here is a look at those 2 to 4 bbl adapters.
Available at advance auto parts stores, $20 bucks.
