Freds 73 Scamp restore on a budget

-
One of my first memories, I was about 5, an uncle came to visit and he had a giant early 70's New Yorker, and I thought the coolest thing in the world was the fender mounted turn signals. Flash ahead 50 years and I was so pleased to find a car with them, I HAD to make them work.
Yea your title blinker made me think I should keep them.

70-71 cuda fender mount signals were more rounded and were painted body color. Maybe an idea to consider.

You are an artist, sir.
Thanks but I'm still learning to do things right. if I would have spent a little more time and a few hundred dollars more it would have turned out better but I'm happy.

To me, you're Michelangelo. I'm a 3 yr. old finger-painting. :)

The good thing is we are all on this page to help each other out so will be here for you if needed.
I don't think your any place close to a finger painter and your car will be great.

You rock Fred, to all of you that don't know him he has forgotten more about body work and paint then most of us will ever know. He is very talented and perhaps a bit to modest on occasion! Unlike my painter who resembles a cricket here lately when asked for an update.

Yea John and still trying to remember all that I knew.
Any good news on your car yet? your car is in nice shape so should be no reason for a hang up.

Leaving texts for painter to no avail. I figure not a good sign. I am thinking about a surprise visit this week to see what's up.
I hope he's getting it done I want to see it at Mopars in the park next year.

And yes the exhaust fan worked good and yes I had a mask on just can't handle paint any more. Been painting since I was a little kid in my dads shop.

Looks like I've missed a couple posts or so-but I know how you feel here...not so much with getting sick, but I've done a couple minor repaints on my wife's Mustang (horizontal surfaces from clearcoat failure) and my eczema went nuts for about three weeks. I wear a filtered mask, but if I don't wear tyvec or similar coveralls, it's itch city for what seems like an eternity.

Otherwise, I'd say you're doing great and I dig the color! I'll have to go back through and catch up on the posts I've missed.

Eczema? yea would think you would have a reaction my cousin had the same problem when painting.

Yeah, it won't be 'great'. I've learned so much on here, and guys helping me out already.. it's unreal.
I'll settle for 'I can drive it around the block'.
You are an inspiration, man. Thanks for sharing your wisdom!

I don't recall ever having it when I was younger doing body work or using rattle cans for the past 20 years of so...guess it's all the strong solvents in 2K paints and such...and one particular trip to the sandbox about a decade ago. My first trip to Qatar while active duty in the AF; about 4 months in and I got these itchy patches on my feet and hands-then thousands of tiny blisters under the skin-absolutely the worst and most persistent itching--poison ivy aint got **** on this. Doctor there said he believed it was dyshidrotic eczema or dyshidrosis...had to keep my feet ventilated as much as I could, especially at work when it was 115* outside, then rub steroid cream on it twice a day. Ever since then, I can't use neosporin or pretty much any other ointment or it'll trigger the same reaction...talk about total garbage...anyway...

I'm really digging what you're doing here Fred-when my Mustang finally goes back together, I can start doing the things on my Scamp that I need to do...quarter panels, trunk floors and dropoffs, dutchman, undercoating and everything else...in the interim, I do want to rebuild the front suspension/disk brake upgrade, and install the B body banjo w/3.55s I have sitting in my shop...but I gotta save up for about 230' of back fence...yay

Not much my friend in the wisdom just like the rest of us learn as we go.

Sorry to here about you having eczema being that bad really sucks when using so much chemical on restoring a car. Being married as you are and no idea if you have kids at home it makes it real hard to restore a car when life gets in the way.

I guess there's worse things to get in the way lol

We don't have kids, so I have a lot more flexibility than many, but when it's as warm as it has been here (hovering around 100 for the past week or so), really pulls the wind out of your sails to want to work on anything after getting home from work--even if the air is circulating in the shop.

All that said, I do have some materials so I really need to be out there at least an hour or so every day laying filler and primer so I can move forward on projects...and practice laying some color too...

anyway, back to your originally scheduled programming!

Hotter than heck out here. I agree brother. Patrick and I will get back on his project when the weather cools down a bit. Gonna work on it every day after school when the temps drop into the 80s. Until then just collecting up more parts for the project. You need to stop by and look at those Wesco seatbelts.

true story--so far this week I've felt like every last bit of energy I have is sapped by the time I walk out to my car...pretty sure I'm on autopilot driving home.

I drink a lot of water out here at work. Use the flavoring that has electrolytes in it, been tracking my water intake and such on an app I have. About 110 oz daily give or take. Supposedly whatever your body weight it, divide by 2, and that number in ounces is what your supposed to drink daily. Been doing low carb keto thing. Working pretty good too. Kids back to school today yaaaay. Now back to our regularly scheduled Scamp build LoL.

Use to drive truck down south from here to mostly Texas and New Mexico and would drive with little stops on the way and when I got to my loading dock and stepped out of the truck on 100 or so degree day it almost knocked me over it was so hot.
You guys can come visit me when it gets to hot there 76* today and 47* at night always room here for ya.

OK today's progress--- I stripped the under coat off the inner fenders and some rust to sand blast out but nothing to bad.
