have a 1970 column shift auto 318 duster, always have needed to lift shifter into park to engage saftey park starter switch, i assume sloppy column. now when you turn ignition to on position starter engages. wondering if anyone has run across this issue. thanks, Don.

I have seen it on a GTO a friend of mine owned, the wires to the starter had been spliced, but were only wrapped in black electrical tape. Eventually heat and vibration wore through the tape and created a short causing the starter to run constantly. You may have a similar problem in the contacts of the ignition switch or at the relay.

thanks I was thinking maybe had something to do with the sloppy column maybe a shorted wire will check relay first may save me column removal.

Worn out ignition switch,
Bad starter relay.
Worn out starter.
Shorted wires.

Not trying to be a smart *** but what have YOU done to diagnose the issue?

This exactly. First thing which has nothing to do with your problem is look over the shift linkage and ADJUSTMENT which is usually under the car. Maybe it's the shifter and maybe a bad bushing which you can fix. Or maybe it just needs adjusted

Next, with the thing cranking, pull either "push on" wire off the start relay. If it quits, it's being powerd in that circuit. If not, might be sticky starter relay, wiring problems down to the starter, or in the starter / solenoid itself

Most often... the column is lowered for inst' panel R&R. In that, the neutral safety adjustment is lost, needs readjusted. That doesn't cause starter run on though. Just neutral safety hunt. So... You have 2 separate issues.
If the yellow wire at starter relay has power when ignition switch is in on position, look at a white plastic harness connector from ignition switch under dash. I've seen them melt and short before but don't recall in such a way as to feed the yellow. I haven't seen it all though. Good hunting.

turned out to be the relay unpluged it while it was running wala! thanks with check out adjustment on column.
