Gathering parts for the wife’s 66 Valiant, she wants more power and a 833 4-speed, currently a 170 3-speed. Should I run a 9.5 steel bell or a 10.5 aluminum bell housing? Car will mostly likely have a mild 318 4bbl or a 360 with stock exhaust manifolds. Some questions I have are can the 9.5 ones take a little thrashing and mild horsepower? I know it’s heavier, cheaper $$$ (usually) but an easy install. Is there a good quality clutch disc for it?

The 10.5 is more heavy duty and easy to get good clutches for, but it will require me to get the 9.5 to 10.5 early abody conversion clutch/z-bar kit that Brewers Performance sells...well, I don’t need to but I used this in my 66 and it was awesome, little spendy but works flawlessly! Only drawback is things get tight when installing these parts.

Tell me what you all think, thanks!!

With a mild build my opinion is spend a little extra and go with the 10.5 then you know you won’t have no problems with replacing clutch disc although Brewers does have a nice 10 inch clutch assembly So you might want to find out about that before you fully make your decision good luck with the build

Go with the 10.5 Keith. You will be ahead of the game when that 318/360 gets upgraded to a ????. lol.
They are pricey but go diaphragm clutch if ya can. They grab instantly, last forever if not hitting strip constantly and you eliminate large clutch pedal spring.

I have a Centerforce II clutch behind my 340 in my 66 Valiant and I love it...shifts like a new car, nice pedal and way smoother than my dad’s stock 66 Barracuda 4-speed.

Same. Have centerforce II in my 65 Dart with very nasty 273.
She will love the ease of clutch operation even when hp is increased.
Remember my friend safety first with the ladies but every inch counts. LOL.
Don’t skimp.

You can actually use the S6 clutch with the 9.5. If you want to beef it up change the springs.

I have a Brewers 10" conversion clutch on my 9.5" flywheel in my 66. I don't hammer on it but it does work smooth with easy pedal pressure. If it isn't too much hassle, I would go with the bigger clutch myself. A diaphram pressure plate should be easy on Kim as well.

I was in the same boat as you....
Im in final stages of painting my 65 Dart/vert/Magnum/4speed convert.
I had all the basically new parts for the 9.5" clutch setup. But didn't have a thing for 10.5"

So I went for the time and money saver set up 9.5" LOL

I figured I can accumulate the 10.5" parts while Im driving it.
Let you know how long before I smoke the clutch......

So, basically what you're askin a forum full of dudes is, if your wife wants 9.5" or 10.5".

I'm just not touchin that one man.

I believe you just did...
subscribed, as I'm going to be rebuilding the A-833 in my StreetVan this Winter and i would like a better, smoother clutch set up for sure. I got a bad left foot and that big spring ain't doing it any favors.

Then get a diaphragm clutch. You're supposed to remove the return spring when you do away with the Borg and Beck. Makes it a LOT easier to depress.
