1966 Valiant Value

The person that purchased the car in 2010 has done some work to the car. He has re-upholstered both front and back seats, installed new tires and has repaired the brakes (they never did feel right while we owned the car).

How about looking at it this way...

Let's see how much he put into the car...

Re-upholstering the front and rear seats.... $500 - $700
New tires... $200 - $250
Repair brakes.... $250 - $300
$950 - $1250

So he put around $950 - $1250 into it for the repairs, if that's all he did and didn't do any more repairs... If he did, try to estimate what those cost him...

Try offering him what he paid for it plus what he put into it for repairs if it's worth that to you... That way he will break even....

If he wants to get more for it, then you have to decide to yourself if it's worth it to you... Give him your offer and tell him that it stands if he changes his mind...

If not, then you can let him put it up for sale and try to get more, which he may or may not... Then if he doesn't sell it, he may come back to you... However there is a chance that he may sell it to someone else... You have to decide if you want to take that chance....
