I'm a newbie, so be gentle. Just purchased a '71 Scamp. Don't know whether it was early or late year. First, how can I determine that? Cap on it doesn't fit perfectly. So, I'm looking for an original gas cap for it.

Your Scamp looks awesome, I do LOVE green.

Post photos of your filler neck & the inside of the cap you have.

I have a '71 cap here somewhere, I'll look for it......

Don't know whether it was early or late year.

A08 on your fender tag is the scheduled production date (the date they hoped to start the cars build) & it decodes to October 8th, 1970 (1971 model year) so early, but not super early.

Some cars were built earlier & / or later than the SPD though, but if the Mylar door sticker is intact on the back of your driver side door, it will show the month & year the car was actually completed.

Well, I was wrong. I did buy a cap from a '71 in a salvage yard years ago, the paint on the cap & car were well weathered & matched.

But it has a 1973 date code, so it must have been replaced at some point.

It may still prove to be helpful though, more on that in the next post.

But the 1973 cap does fit the 1970 car just fine, nice & snug;

You can see that my '73 cap has 4 ears like yours.

I tried to hold it in the same way as your first photo with the large alignment tabs in the same position.

The mounting plate itself as well as the smaller 'snugging' tabs are clocked different than yours though.

Mine stays on. But, if I turn it a little too far, clockwise, it loosens again

You need the early 71 abody cap...hard to find..I needed 5 ...found a man on Ebay painted or chrome $37

Todd, Mtrhead is right. I have a 1971 Duster with a build date of August 10th. It took me a few years to find the right gas cap as Chrysler changed the lip of the gas tank tube sometime in the middle of the 1971 production year. Without that knowledge I bought two 1971 gas caps from different members that didn’t fit. Oldmanmopar posted a series of photos that showed the differences in the gas caps. I then had to ask the seller for the date on the fender tag or the door jamb in order to get the right one. Good luck.

Cool, thanks for the information. If you happen to run across one, please let me know.

I just offered one to someone else for the shipping cost. Its was rusty but cleaned and usable. I did not here back from him its 2 days. I have a drawer of them but I am not selling the nice ones I have three 71 cars. The pictures posted I took and they are all still here plus many more. If I don't here from him by Monday you can have that one I mentioned for the shipping cast I told him $5.00
