I tried to find an answer to my question but couldn’t. Are 64’ and 65’ valiant hoods the same? Also would both fit and work for my 65’barracuda? I’m still learning about early a bodies. A guy has one for sale and I don’t want to drive 4 hours and get burned. Thanks everyone.

They may look the same but think they are different as far as the hood latching goes. I think on the 64 the latching mechanism is under the hood. I do know on a 65 the latch is behind the nameplate on the hood. There is a cutout on the nameplate to access the latch lever. The 64 nameplate doesn’t have this. If I’m wrong, someone will provide the correct info.

The 65 Valiant hood will definitely fit a 65 Barracuda. The 64 not for the reasons I mentioned

64 Barracuda has the latch behind the nameplate. Ask for pictures or verification before you go.

Looks like a 64’. Maybe I shouldn’t be hung up with that? Guy wants 200 and is solid with no dents. Hoods are hard to come buy here in Holland MI.

The part numbers are different so I don’t know if it would work, it might.

It’s definitely a 64. You “might” be able to use it on a 65 IF you swap all the 64 latch stuff over to the 65.

I have a NOS 64 hood emblem which says VALIANT instead of PLYMOUTH. It was probably for the Canadian or Australian market.

My latch stuff for the 65 hood I have currently are crusty and maybe needs replacement any way. Wonder if I just use the 64’ hood and the latch. Does it have a different striker? It’s hard finding good parts nearby that’s why I am reluctant to pass on the hood.

I just did some looking on Google at 64 and 65 Valiants and Barracuda's and can see why the difference in the hoods. The 64 Valiant has a gap above the grille to allow access to the hood release whereas the 64-65 Barracuda and 65 Valiant have the grille very tight to the hood with little to no gap. I would think the only way to use the 64 hood on the 65 is use the 64 grille or cut an access hole to get to the release. This is what I could see from looking on Google. I could be mistaken. Someone else may be able to verify or correct this

I would think this is why the hood release on the 65 is through the hood and behind the name plate

64-65 valiant/cuda hoods physically interchange, but as others have stated the hood latch mechanism, and front emblem are different. You can put a 64 hood on a 65 car, if you cut a hole in he front of the hood (like the 64) and use the 65 latch setup, and 65 emblem. You can put a 65 hood on a 64 car, by just using the 64 latch setup and 64 emblem, the emblem will cover the 65 hole.
PS: I think the 64 Cuda hood, in the same as 65 Valiant/Cuda.

Awesome info. I think I might do some cutting with that new info. I will use the roached out 65’ hood I currently own as a reference. I wonder if the latch will mount the same or if the bolt holes are the same for the attachment of the mechanism? Great info everyone.

The latch bar that bolts to the upper header support. It’s what the hood latch mechanism hooks to when it’s closed.
Got it. Thanks. Great idea. Can anyone confirm if there is a difference? The dude doesn’t have the car unfortunately.

I'm pretty sure that is the same, as is the latch mechanism itself. Just the release lever and shaft being different. I'll try to look later, today, to confirm.

I wouldn't get too worried about the hood latch. That actual assembly looks identical in all the pictures I've looked at. I'm pretty sure the only difference between the 2 is the actual release lever. The 65 has the home in the front with the rod going out the front where the 64 has the shorter release lever that sits behind the grille. If you can cut the hole in the front and get the release lever to fit the 64 hood I think you'll be all set. Just my opinion though... Could be something I'm missing.

Everyone has been great with all the help I’ve received. I am going to go get the hood. I wouldn’t have a hood for my car without all the awesome information.

I looked at my 64 and 65 Valiants, to verify what is different. I do not have the front hood emblem on my 65. The holes to mount the emblem are in different (distance apart) locations, but new holes can be drilled, and the old holes will be covered by the emblem. 65 hood release has a small support bracket which the 64 does not, but the mounting holes are in both hoods. The latch mechanism looks to be identical on both, except for the release lever itself, which can be swapped out.
The bailer bar is identical on both.
