70 vs 71 column

-
Fit? Yes.

Different interlock system to be able to remove the ignition key though, the 1970 column requires the extra linkages.

It can be disabled, but 1970 columns are a one year only deal & people do seek them out when needed.

Does this look like a 1970 column? I am converting to floor shift auto on my 71.

Nope.

No key release tab for 1970 model year cars, so this one is newer than that.

You can also convert the column shift column in the car to floor shift by swapping the collars & they are available aftermarket.

Will a 1970 PS column fit on a 1971 PS car both A bodies? I'm not worried about the wiring, just the lengths.

Yes, it will...

My son lost his key for his 71 Valiant and we swapped the steering column from my old 70 swinger in it... Worked fine...

Wouldn't it have been easier to swap a lock cylinder ?

Or you could have done the most daunting task in automotive history...... had a key made :poke:

We did what we could with what we had available at the time... :popcorn:
That's fair....

I usually just remove the lock cylinder and then you can start it with your finger. You don't need a stinkin key.

Maybe that's why people are calling me a hillbilly

I bought a '69 Dart from a hillbilly once.

He started it, fired right up & it drove fine.

We went inside his trailer, I gave him the cash & he signed the title over.

I asked him for the keys.......

He says;

"Keys, what keys? Did you see me start it?"

I said no.

He says;

"There are two switches under the dash, let me show you."

He was right.

One for power on & one to engage the starter.

They were household 110v light switches with the tops bent over & screwed to the bottom of the dash frame.

Sometimes people just use what they have, I get it.
