Hello, I'm a newbie to this forum. I was referred to this forum by a member of "allpar.com"

Here is my question:
This is a story that goes back 10 or so years. My wife and I used to own a 1966 Valiant, 4-door which so happened to have belonged to her grandmother. Her grandmother bought the car new. We had the car for a few years and sold it in 2010. We now have the opportunity to buy the car back. The person that purchased the car in 2010 has done some work to the car. He has re-upholstered both front and back seats, installed new tires and has repaired the brakes (they never did feel right while we owned the car).

The car is a daily driver and is in no way a show car. The car runs and drives pretty good but the body has some rust spots, especially one behind the passenger side rear door. Plus a few other dents and dings. There are other issues also, the radio doesn't work(didn't when we had it), the outside mirrors need replaced, radio antenna needs replaced, etc. The chrome is in very good shape. The car still has the original hub caps. The owner still has all the paperwork we gave him when we sold it to him, bill-of-sale, owners manual, repair receipts, etc.

My question is, what would you think this car is worth? He has shot me a price which I think is a bit high but I could be wrong. I made him an offer but he wouldn't budge off his asking price.

I do not have any photos so I know it's tough to estimate without seeing the car but what is your opinion?

Appreciate all feedback!

Thanks!

Mike

I would guess about 1500, also consider how much you sold it to him? Gauge the sold price and condition vs now condition. He may be playing your
on sentimental valve.

Without pictures it’s almost impossible to help figure out a good value...parts are tough to find for a 66 since it’s a one year only body style and they don’t make many parts for them.

Welcome to fabo Mike. Like others have said really impossible to gauge accurately without pics. With that said.
* you have owned before and know history
* brake work & upholstery work done is big positive
* it is a more door( 4dr vs 2dr). Just not that desirable except to geeks like me. lol
*agree with 66jim he may be using sentimental value pricing

In my area as described without pics and if I was a buyer. Would be looking at
$1000 to $1800

Welcome to FABO. I'd say about $1500 plus whatever the family sentimental value is. Depending on your family, that could be $1.00 to $10,000. Pay for it what it's worth to your and your wife to keep it in the family. Nobody can tell you what that amount is.

We might be able to help better if we knew what the sale price was to him 10 years ago, what he's asking now, and what your offer was. As everyone else has said, it's tough to do value with no photos and not a lot of info. Some details that would help are:

Current mileage
Engine/tranny/rear end condition
More details on the body condition
Tire condition and age
Other parts of the interior (headliner, carpet, door panels, dash)
A better list of what works and what doesn't

I'm sure others will chime in with their thoughts, but this list is a good starting point.

In good running condition around $2,000 with some minor issues to sort out. It depends on condition and some other factors. Maybe some more if its in exceptionally good original condition or has a V8 & AC. But maybe less than that too. To me “new” tires means tire with a date code of 2019, not looks new - today’s tires should be replaced after five years and many vintage cars don’t get driven a lot and the tires look great but are old and should be replaced. Some pics would help a lot with understanding “rust spots”.

The person selling most likely is expecting to get all of their investment back and this never happens with Valiants.

The market value of this car may be much lower than the value to you. With more info & pics we can help with a fair market value but you need to determine the value to you.

The person that purchased the car in 2010 has done some work to the car. He has re-upholstered both front and back seats, installed new tires and has repaired the brakes (they never did feel right while we owned the car).

How about looking at it this way...

Let's see how much he put into the car...

Re-upholstering the front and rear seats.... $500 - $700
New tires... $200 - $250
Repair brakes.... $250 - $300
$950 - $1250

So he put around $950 - $1250 into it for the repairs, if that's all he did and didn't do any more repairs... If he did, try to estimate what those cost him...

Try offering him what he paid for it plus what he put into it for repairs if it's worth that to you... That way he will break even....

If he wants to get more for it, then you have to decide to yourself if it's worth it to you... Give him your offer and tell him that it stands if he changes his mind...

If not, then you can let him put it up for sale and try to get more, which he may or may not... Then if he doesn't sell it, he may come back to you... However there is a chance that he may sell it to someone else... You have to decide if you want to take that chance....

Thanks to all for the feedback! FYI for those that were interested. My wife sold the Valiant to the gentleman in 2010 for $600. At the time we were in a bit of a financial crunch. 9 years later he was asking $3000. Although he did a few things to improve the value of the car, it's just not worth that much to us. We offered him $2000 but he wouldn't budge off the 3K price. So, we have moved on and gave someone else the opportunity to purchase the car.

Been in similar situation.
Heartfelt / sentimental feeling is one thing. Gut feeling is another.
Tough choice between the two sometimes.
I tend to lean towards gut feeling.
I think you did the right thing.
Good chance he will be calling you in the future to see if your offer still stands.
